Hi, i have a customer who owes us £50. Whats they best way to proceed? Is it worth going the small claims route, i think it would cost more chasing the debt than the actual amount owed. But i want the money, more principal than need. I've completed the job required and should be paid. Customer is obviously happy as wanted me to do more work, everytime i ask for the money he says "his gonna try and pay me today"

I think that it is always a good idea to sign an agreement with the client on payments and deadlines, agreeing on some fines if the client will be late with the payment. If you don't have it, then the customer can waste a lot of your time and energy till you will get the payment for your services.

The latest thing I saw working is telling to the customer that you will sell his debt to the debt collecting agency. It made him pay me immediately.

Steve - if he thinks he can get away with not paying then of course he is happy for you to do more work!! Turning up unannounced and making a bit of a nuisance of yourself can sometimes work for such a small debt. If that doesn't work you could try Money Claim Online but that will cost you £25 which you won't be able to recover from the other party.

I think I would just put it down to experience and when he rings up and asks you to do more work just say "Do you know what I think? I think this..." then just hang up.
