Skype

Free, Reliable & Way Cool. Can't fault it & it's an essential tool...the fact I can have it on my iPhone too is just the clincher.

We actually (in common with the BBC) use it a lot for impromptu 2-way voice links for broadcast on radio - on a decent linespeed it'll do just as good as any G722 ISDN when its given a decent input.

I've signed most of our clients up to Skype & they have a direct link through to me using it & it's great - we all love it!

The other cool thing is we also have a company wide Skype account, which links into our IP PBX...as a 3CX reseller it's great to show off the power of both 3CX & Skype together...people are amazed when we tell them they're going through our normal phone system...Gimmick? Yes! ...but very cool! ;)

Skype's fine for what it is. But it isn't a telephone service and it's the best way of doing business VoIP. (Obviously we are :)

I use skype to run my coaching business. Over the last year I've been using it the reliability has increased, and it is an amazing free tool. I find that the call quality detoriates with international calls to hong kong and Australia.

God, I spend all day on skype

For me its the best, quickest and cheapest way to in touch with my overseas centers. If its not type chatting its video calling or conferance calls, and its for free :D

Seriously couldnt work without it now.

    Hi Midgetman,

    Have you tried VoIP?
Why not apply for a free account with us, download the free softphone and give it a go!:D
I have tried both and can definately notice a difference in sound quality.

We do also use voip for the centers outbound calling, but for all day contact and file transfers etc skype is perfect. To be honest I very rarely have line quality with it. Video calling is also something that it is great for, I can do interveiws online, see the people I am talking to (good when setting up new contracts) I have even fired agents on it :)

We use Skype for video coversations between Newcastle and Sheffield but the image does tend to break up occasionaly. Bizzarly I have also used it with a friend in California and the quality of those calls is often far better?

Don't think I'd use it for initial conversations with clients.

Sidetrack: I'm actually really impressed by the call quality we get on Voipfone :)

Back to the point: We use Skype and have it linked from our website as an 'online' contact method. We very rarely get anything apart from Spam ("Hello I am being wondering if you are wanting to being outsourcing work to us?") through it, though.

We did use GoogleTalk in the same way before, but because of how the 'web chat' works with it, it's too hard to screen out the spam.

We don't use Skype for voice.

I use Skype frequently and the only problems I have had with it have been when my internet connection has been ropey, or my wireless packs up. Surely I'd have these same problems with VOIP?

Depends what the problems are really - Skype is just a proprietary form of VoIP but it's generally pretty good at dealing with various bandwidth problems because it was designed to work for poor connections.

The big difference tho' between the sort of VoIP that the global telecoms industry supports (SIP) and Skype is that good business service providers don't really use the internet.

With Skype your call is all on the open internet which means it'll mostly work but if it's on a congested route it'll fall apart. With a service like ours you're essentially using a virtual private network - your call get's to us over that, not the internet and we then send it on over either private peering or squirt it directly into the ordinary telephone system.

That and the fact that you can do an awful lot more with business VoIP than Skype - Skype isn't a telephone service, it's a software application. (Good tho' it is).
