Signup Page/Window - Newsletters

Hi guys,

I have never done email marketing properly so I want to get some advice. I have used mailchimp in past to send messages to everyone registered in my website. Gave about 10-15% clicks.

Now I want to create a signup window which pops-up when person visits my site for the first time, and then send him a free stuff (a PDF book) - is it worth it?

How technically I can do that? Any good Wordpress plugins? How do I go from signup and automatically sending a book?

Thanks in advance,

MrBinary

It's a great way to annoy people. So if you want less conversions crack on.

There are loads of WP plugins that do this. Google is your friend
Maan! I know how to use Google, already searched for things and read articles about it, just want peoples opinion. I am asking from people who have such signup windows. Most of popups are annoying, but I believe it is the best way to get a good email database.

It depends on the site, how it is marketed and to whom. There is no single answer to your question.

Those people who do sign up for your newsletter, how many become clients?

About 5% became the clients of our partners, but I was running an information website not the business one.

Just thought there are people out there who did the same thing in past and could you give me the leads. It is no problem for me, as I have almost established the way to do it.

I personally hate pop-ups and anything that removes control or interrupts me when I'm trying to use a site. A pop-up form as soon as they land is a barrier to your content and is like saying "hey there, I know you haven't had a chance to look around yet, but give me your email address so I can send you stuff."

A clear, concise sign-up form in the sidebar or below a blog post is a much less intrusive option, and gives users time to go through your site and read the content available. If they like what they read they'll opt-in if you prompt them after the content.

You are right about the barrier, always hated them as well, but want to try and see how it goes. Will probably to go for pop-up option when person leaves my site and say: "Hey! Haven't found what you looked for, grab a free eBook about Binary Options". :D

We use them on several sites and do get a good sign up rate and more importantly a good conversion from those sign ups. Its a question of timing and flexibility, for example optinmonster has some good templates, low yearly cost and allows a/b testing and analytics. There are loads of free ones, some downright ugly and clunky, others good looking but won't work with every theme and scant adjustments to be made on template, timing, position etc. Not all will work with mail chimp and many won't work with off the shelf themes.

I don't like the intrusory ones but do like the ones which offer more information and appear only at the end of visit and not again if I revisit the site within 24 hours. There is a fair bit to consider so its a bit of a research job if you are looking for free and trial and error. Just remember to take back up of your whole site before starting to install them.
