Hi there,

Do SEO companies allow you to work with them? Or do they prefer to do their thing, charge you, and thats it?!

Reason I ask... is I want to learn, and am happy to pay for help of course.

I'm looking for someone who can analyse my site, tell me where I'm going wrong, tell me what to do, and so on.

Or am I being unrealistic!?

Unfortunately, SEO isn't a rocket science. Nobody can say where you're doing wrong or predict results. There are a few technical things and several simple facts.

SEO is a part of your marketing. SEO rely on your marketing decisions. How strong your marketing? The SEO performance of your site depends on an answer to this question.

The approach is the most important thing when you hire SEO specialist or agency.
SEO doesn't mean to use any SEO tool, to get red flags and to fix "issues". SEO needs systematic approach that is based on marketing, tech knowledge and experience. Also, there are three levels of SEO which an agency can propose. For business site it'd be better to choose intermediate or advanced level of an SEO.

I could recommend our agency because we provide full range of services (UI/UX design, web development, website testing, SEO), if you are interested in our approach. Our approach is SEO marketing strategy. We begin our process from research of your audience to anderstand their needs and pains. Also we audit your marketing and your site (UI/UX design, bugs, informational architecture, content mapping, context). Tech SEO issues should be fixed.
We don't follow majority part of "basic SEO tips and check lists" which are provided by SEO community.

Well, first - no one will give you free knowledge. The reason is... well... check Fiverr, words are useless. The second thing is that you will not be able to learn everything for a month simply because new things and requirements are coming every day... You can learn the basics, for sure.
If an SEO company or freelancer have to work on your website and at the same time teach you, they will spend double the time to finish a task that may take for example an hour or just 20 mins, does not matter. So the price becomes double as well. That is why if you want to learn SEO from online courses, find SEO Courses near you..... OR hire someone to do the work... Be aware that when you start learning you will have to spend time only for that, and if the website ( your business ) is a shop or promotes your services, you will have no time to work. This one depends on your business.

There are some things that you can learn on your own which will improve your rankings. Plenty of self help guides in websites and books. It is good to gain that knowledge and then go to an SEO knowing exactly what you want and being able to asses whether their offering makes sense. However, if you are in a very competitive market, an SEO's experience can be valuable. So the answer is that you can learn the basics quite easily but in order to be good enough to rank well in the most competitive keywords, you will need to spend a lot of time and effort.

Plenty of Videos on YouTube about SEO. It's not that hard really. The most important factor is onsite SEO, but most so called experts want you to think its all about Link building
It is hard, there is no easy work, mostly is time consuming. This is important, but there is no MOST important, all factors are the MOST important, there is no less important things. And so on. And if it was so yeasy you wouldnt have business, there wont be SEO, marketing and digital advertising business at all.......

Time consuming yes, hard no. There are no tricks, just research and experience.

There are many SEO courses on Udemy which can be used to learn or to revise from as when you have purchased one you can return to it whenever you like.
    Have you done these courses?

Most of those courses are poor quality and in some instances outright dangerous as there is so much misinformation there.
And the older the course the less relevant it will be.

You telling me that is easy to gain experience for a month like SEO expert with 5-10-15 years of work in this area ?!
No. I just said it’s not hard. That being said, you can learn a lot in a month. And a lot of what was learnt 5, 10, 15 years ago probably isn’t relevant anymore.

Its always relevant... If you say, quote "probably isn’t" it is sad for you, your thinking and probably shows the quality of other things. But whatever.....
    Sigh…

Loads of SEO techniques no longer work. A long time ago article submission was a recognised technique. Or how about keyword meta tags. Or reciprocal links (and link wheels). EMD used be a thing. As was link sculpting. And what about TBPR.

    Sad isn’t it.

And guess what. Many old methods are still working to this day ( if you don't use them aggressively ), not all the time, depends on the niche and other factors depends on the goals. In smaller countries, many old techniques are still being used and also working as well. This is what I observe with different tests ( also tested successfully on client websites ). P.S. Page rank today equals PA and dA.

"P.S. Page rank today equals PA and dA."
No, it doesn't. I've been reading this thread for a while out of interest and although I don't claim to be an SEO expert I know a great deal more than you.
In your place I'd stop arguing before you make a bigger fool of yourself.

    Its always relevant

The only things that I don't do now that I used to do 10 years ago are:
    • No longer able to add a domain to Alexa.com without signing up for a free trial
    • Google+ is gone
    • Using the Referrer Spam Blocker tool (no longer available)
Every other task I compete is the same. So @fisicx is technically telling the truth when I can relate to the 3 tasks above.

But apart from those, my personal methods haven't changed.

Anyone else think of something they don't do now, that they used to do a decade ago?

    As a quick 'top-of-the-head"

    Reciprocal links
    Link directories
    Paid links
    Exact match domains
    Article submission
    Business directories
    Infographics
    Internal link sculpting
    Keyword density analysis
    Guest blogging

;) Exact Match Domains lol. Genuinely I get around a dozen or so emails a year from potential clients asking for domain advice and moaning that "newcastle dog walker" .co.uk has been taken.

I then ask the client what the domain is for B&Q :p

Does anyone else remember the video of the guy who bought a domain about guitars? I can't recall the exact search phrase off the top of my head, let's say it was "Custom Guitars Alabama" or something like that. In 10 minutes he'd bought the domain, installed wordpress, showed you the front end HELLO WORLD then searched in Google for "Custom Guitars Alabama" and he was at the top of Google.

You are making me feel old

Infographics - I think I've got one on my website blog somewhere. Yes, it was a Canva template that I tweaked. Tineye tells me 72 other people have used it lol.

Thanks for making me look for the infographic, I've just discovered I've got a new featured snippet! Time to refresh the blog post, right?

Nice Google update, it wasn't there in April/May

Thought of more good SEO techniques:
    • Blog commenting
    • Social media profiles
    • Forum signatures
    • Making content same colour as background
    • Location pages (all you need to do is change the name of the town on each page)

I am sat here smiling as in a few cases some of the things listed as 'no longer working' actually still work :p

As for "PageRank is DA & PA", that for me was a foot, aim, fire moment as PR has nothing whatsoever to do with domain Authority or Page authority.

Page rank had nothing whatsoever to do with 'pages' it was named after the inventor Larry Page :D

Initially google had a single metric which was value, it was a numeric value. Then after a while they brought in 'relevance' to the mix (mostly as a result of acquiring Applied Semantics in 2004 (ish)

Many other algorithms and sub-algorithms were brought in, but they still today pretty much rely on those two elements of Value and relevance, with the major of the two being relevance.

Indeed. But with some big caveats. For example, bog standard reciprocal linking doesn't help. But if (as you say) there is relevance and the links add value then they are worth having. If you hand knit woolly socks on Skye and sell them in a shop in Crewe then there is relevance in linking to each other. But only within the context of the page. For example the knitter will link to the shop as a place to buy the socks and the shop will link to the knitter as the originator of the socks. Place the links within a paragraph and they will add value. Bill Slawski wrote about the Google patent for this years ago.

This is exactly the point and it's the same with many other 'techniques' that have been in and out of fashion with the SEO community. For example...

Link 'Sculpting'. It's good practise to have a decent internal link structure for both Google and UX but Google discounted the practice of 'sculpting' - ie. using 'no-follow' attributes to control the flow of page 'juice' many years ago.

Infographics. If you can create a unique and high-value infographic that other relevant sites wish to link to - great. But creating a graphic for the sake of creating a graphic is no help to anyone.

So for every 'technique' discounted (I hate the use of the word 'technique' because it smacks of manipulation) there will always be instances where it can be of value.

Exactly, don't think of them as techniques. Think in terms of value and relevance. If what you do adds value and is relevant then it's probably OK. Don't even think about it an SEO thing. What you are doing is marketing. A no-follow link from a respected site won't help your ranking but it could get some decent leads.

Just ask 'does this help the visitor' if the answer is yes then cool, if the answer is no, then be more creative in the thinking. :p

Guest blogging is an AMAZING way to drive some Google love, but buying guest posts isn't ideal as you run the risk of not controlling the content on that site.

Buying links again, my golden rule is never buy links from someone selling links :)
