SEO Advice

I have had my site up and going for around 5 months now. I am still adding content and products to it but I am having no joy with getting my site found on organic searches on the big search engines?

http://vineyardwine.co.uk

I understand that SEO is a very complex business and there's never one thing that can change it all but I must be doing something wrong. If I type 'vineyard wine' into google I don't even come up in the first four or five pages (I gave up looking after that a customer wont go past the first page). I really want to rank well for 'wine' 'buy' 'online'.

I would appreciate any advice or a point in the right direction as I really should have made some impact by now. Check my site out and let me know if you have any thoughts!

This is a complex topic - but to directly answer the question about "vineyard wine" you have not used the term on the page in any highly placed H1 tags, the keyword is only used twice!? - you only have five domains linking to you and a lack of content...

I suggest you have a read of this guide first: http://moz.com/beginners-guide-to-seo but you might want to pay for some SEO help, which will be anything from £300 - £1000 a month for an average of six months.

  • Content

I dare say that the template should be revised, because there's too much "redundant" information which may trigger the "thin content" alert from Google, for example:

http://vineyardwine.co.uk/rum

this is an indexed url, but there are no bottles listed!
it's the same for brandy: http://vineyardwine.co.uk/brandy

  • canonicalization
around 195 pages involving the parameters are being indexed (as of 14 july) this could lead to duplication which may trigger the panda penalty and it's probably keeping the website from ranking properly.
you can check them yourself typing on google: site:vineyardwine.co.uk inurl:eek:rder=

I would start from there :)

Thanks everyone, I an extension added to my shopping cart to stop the duplication of content, for example a wine may be in the red wine category and the Australian category but the extensions stops duplication by canonicalization. So it doesn't work for empty category's. I take it am better to take these out until I have content for them?

This looks like a full time job, anyone know where you can get experienced people to do this at a reasonable price?

Thanks, how did you see this I cant find it. I have a redirect set up in my .httaccess file, and I have tested it on seositecheckup.com and it past there Canonicalization Test. I also have the rel=canonicalization added to my header tags on pages where there is duplication. What am I missing, I have no preferred domain set in my google webmasters tools, could this be the problem?

Who searches for 'vineyard wine'?

If you want rank well for online wine sales then you need lots of money. Thousands of pounds. Because that's the sort of sums the competition is paying. So maybe change your tactics. Start promoting individual wines so someone searching for an '2013 algerian shiraz' finds your site.

As an aside, I tried to buy some wine from your site and gave up - if you join the forum as a full memeber you can get the site reviewed.

Ok thanks, do you mean from an SEO view or a customer view? For me I was just trying to instil confidence in the shopper that we are a reputable and trust worthy company. From my experience I wont make a purchase on a site that I don't trust. What do you think I should be doing?

PS. Once again I really appreciate all your feedback.

And how about focusing more on social networks? I know that's not exactly what you're asking about, but SEO is one way for getting customers and, as I hope, your ultimate goal is to get new customers. With such competitive keywords any SEM campaign may be really expensive while facebook campaign doesn't cost you a dime. Social campaign on fb may drive new customers to your website (if well handled) what will increase your ranking as well.

I ran your site through one of our online tools and you're coming up with no keywords. But that doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong.
I did however notice that your website isn't very mobile friendly. It's definitely worth making it more mobile friendly. There are a few technical errors that can be changed on it. I would also suggest setting up a Google my business account.

I also agree that you should rethink your keyword strategy, those are some pretty competitive and broad keywords.

Hello Lynch's

Who knows vineyardwine.co.uk, I didn't until today, so you are going to need content to get noticed.

You have a couple of vital meta snippets missing, a very small content area, to be seen and not a brand yet, content is the key, but is determined how you write Good Content.

An array of differing fonts, some good some awful, your htags are poor.

Alt tags are missing.

Too many javascripts, no java is best.

Your site needs compressing, pictures probably need optimising, your website probably needs gzipping as well to make Bing, Google, MSN & Yahoo happy.
