So just got the awful news my father in law has fell off a ladder and broken his shoulder/arm. He is likely to be unable to work for 6-8 weeks at least.

He works for a small company but is a self employed joiner so when he is off does not get paid.

Does anyone know what his options are: he's said about 10 years ago when he tore a tendon in his hand it wasn't worth signing on at Job Centre.... I know nothing about what his options are- can he get some kind of incapacity benefit? Any info appreciated.

He needs to claim ESA. Just google it.

Also, here we go again. Is he really self employed or does his employer just tell him that he is? Does he work for other people and have his own clients or does he just work for this company? Does he set his own prices? Does he supply his own tools? Can he get someone else to do his jobs?

It does not really help your father in law now, but it may be worth looking at Income Protection insurance for in the future - http://manchestermortgagebroker.co.uk/income-protection-insurance/ - it pays an income if you are unable to work due to accident or sickness.

To be fair, even employed people should take a look at it as sick pay only pays out for so long.
