Seeking Opportunities in UK Startups - Advice Needed!

Hello everyone,

I'm from Portugal and will be relocating to the UK in the upcoming months as my partner is undertaking a course at a London hospital. We will be in the country for roughly 6 months.

Professionally, I've been working in system development since 2002. I have experience in coding, building websites, systems, and even dabbling in game creation during my spare time. However, I must confess that my spoken English is not up to par. I taught myself the language and whilst I have a decent grasp on reading and writing, I feel that my spoken English could do with some refinement.

I thought that an effective way to enhance my fluency would be to immerse myself in everyday work situations in English. Hence, I'm keen on finding startups or early-stage companies that might be on the lookout for a CTO or developer. I'd be willing to work in exchange for a stake in the company, should the venture prove successful.

It's worth noting that I've already got my Global Talent visa approved, so there would be no work permissions-related issues.

Would anyone have any advice, tips, or contacts that might assist me in this endeavour? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks.

You know how to build website, so I suggest you doing dropshipping business.
Novevan,

Thank you for the suggestion. However, I'm currently looking for something more challenging, even if there isn't a guaranteed financial return. I'd like to get involved in creating a product or an application, and I believe that would also help me improve my spoken English. Thanks again for your input and assistance!

Best regards,

Having worked in IT recruitment for 27 years in the past the IT industry in the UK looks predominately for past identikit experience not future potential.

Search for companies in your geographical area working in industry sectors you have experience of and message them direct (that for instance includes if you worked in Automotive, messaging software houses writing Automotive ERP packages)

Hello IanSuth,

Thank you for your practical suggestions. I'll explore local companies in sectors I am familiar with and try the direct approach as you recommended.

Thank you,

Back at home in Portugal if a random stranger had called your fully staffed company or sent an email offering their services what would you have done?

Maybe you would be better off signing up with one of the many agencies and seeing if any opportunities come your way.
