Hi

I do SEO for a company that has loads of new sites - many of them only a few months old. Clearly I'm going to have an upward struggle getting high in the search ranks until a few months. Having optimised the sites I've been doing some serious link building: creating blogs and writing articles. I then bookmarked these links and pinged them.

Short of just continuing this process can anyone else suggest what I can do to increase volume and ranking?

Cheers

You can do it ethical / white hat way. Build remarkable content, spread the word via social networks and hope people will link to it. Every other form of "Link building" is breaking Google's guidelines.

Ugh. That's not serious, it's just fiddling round the edges. Blogs are only any use if you make regular posts. The actual value of any link from the blog is dependent on the realtionship between the two. In any case, links from the blog only count once irrespective of how many marketing posts you make.

It's easy to get sites ranked well in a couple of months if you have found your niche and the competition isn't too fierce. Great content and a well built site can pull in all sorts of converting customers who carry out long tail searches.

There is plenty of quick stuff you can do; that as Toni touches on are not really in Google's guidelines for promoting your site in search engines.

    There are things like:

    Article submissions
    Directory submissions
    Link exchange
    Paid reviews
    Link brokers
    Press releases
    Blog commenting
    Forum signatures

If you want to keep it strictly in Google's guidelines, research content that will be of interest in your niche, network in your niche and find sites that you think will link to your content. Also, don't expect much in terms of increased rankings on commercial pages if you are doing that. Results will be very slow.

So you are charging companies for SEO, without really understanding SEO? nice work if you can get it , I hope you don't decide to take up brain surgery :D

Hmm, you guys are a little quick to criticise.
Perhaps I was too vague in my post. I create fresh content for article submissions, I submit to directories, I create press releases, I comment on blogs and regularly participate in forums. Most of the stuff I create I then bookmark and ping. I have also dabbled in using video. The blogs I create are all individual blogs - new blogs created around fresh spun articles. Yes, this is gray hat but it works really well.

I get really good lasting results however I am now working on affiliate sites that require quick results. I suppose the answer is just to do more of what I am doing or perhaps try doing some new stuff. Question is what new stuff?

    Jac,

Most blogging communities have various 'authority' figures so if you are developing a brand then getting those people behind them and leveraging can be powerful. I would say over half of what you are doing is SMM which needs a clear strategy behind it , is longer term and harder to measure in terms of clear ROI. There are various KPI's you can put in place but it really depends what type of sites/industries and service/products you are working on.
