SagePay or Paypal

I am one of those that absolutely despise paypal. There will be those that love them I know otherwise known as the "yet to be screwed" but I much prefer to buy from those that offer more than one option, including the fading away cheque.

Although not trading for very long, ive had paypal in place for about 2 months longer than sagepay. About 50% of my orders have come from sagepay.

Although they may have ordered using paypal i will never know so i would recommend using something along side paypal - whether that be sagepay or totalwebsolutions (above) or someone else.

I remember a client of mine wanted to use Paypal exclusively. It proved fatal until we got them set up with a PSP as well. Having said that, I personally use Paypal whenever I can so I don't have to type in my credit card number - very lazy indeed!

We use SecureTrading who have proved to be a very good PSP and so far have never let us down. Netbanx have got to be the worst in my opinion - you will drown in paperwork to get started! And Worldpay seem to let any card through and are overly expensive - especially for chargebacks (again IMHO).

Personally we prefer to recommend Sagepay. It's cheaper if you're running larger volumes. Otherwise, both have the same technical merits; the ability to integrate to an ecommerce store without sending your customer off to another site to enter card details, refunds, reporting etc. Both have an API.

One of the main benefits of course with Paypal is that you don't need a merchant account, which can take a while to set up and for some businesses is almost impossible (for example if you sell pre-bookings on events).

I've found it best to offer customers as many options as possible. Using Paypal and Sage Pay will give customers a choice AND keep your site functioning should you have problems as we once did with Paypal who closed us down on a technicality mid promotion!
So to be safe and professional - offer both payment methods.

We dropped PayPal as an option for customers and fraud attempts against our shop dropped by over 50%. UK PSPs are far more secure, they enforce UK regulations rather than whichever PayPal are currently using and like many others, if a shop only offers PayPal I avoid - simply because anyone can set up a PayPal account.
