Restaurants reduce food wastage by charging customers extra

This is quite extreme and I can't imagine many restaurants who would be brave enough to do the same thing:

Some restaurants deal with food wastage by fining customers for not finishing their food. It sounds like a good incentive to reduce waste but couldn't this ruin the restaurant's reputation as it may be considered "rude" and we all know that being rude at a restaurant does not work.

I wouldn't eat at any of those places. I'm not going to be told how to eat my food, thank you very much. This is probably the best alternative:

Marmar restaurant is not the only restaurant that is sick of customers wasting food. If you are dining at the Japanese restaurant Wafu in Sydney, Australia, don't even think about asking for a doggie bag. The restaurateur, Yukako Ichikawa, is encouraging diners to eat all of their food by introducing a 30% discount for those who finish their plates. As part of their strict policy they state, "vegetables and salad on the side are NOT decorations; they are part of the meal too", so you can't even get away from the side orders either.
By providing a discount, they're providing a polite incentive which people can choose to take. However, I'd consider punishing customers out of order. These restaurants should be grateful they're getting the custom in the first place. Many other venues are not so fortunate.

I think these kinds of schemes would only land the place to be shut down. People who spend their money demand to be respected but if you point out to a customer in public for not finishing his food this will be regarded as a disgrace and result in having a row and losing the customer.

I have had many experiences when going to a new place I ordered and it was more than i could eat, how on earth can I eat more than my stomach can hold or digest? The idea is great to save food and discourage wastage but I think it is not applicable in public areas. Try promoting it at home and thus the habit will prevail.

I can't imagine the restaurant owner walking up to the diners and demanding extra money for not finishing food. The place will soon scare away customers from ever coming back.

Brighton Restaurants

Though the initiative is commendable, but this kind of forced eating will never seem pleasing to the customers. It will strongly hit the hospitality quotient of that Restaurant. Moreover it seems more like when parents often admonish their their kids to finish up all the meal.

What about restaurants offering different sized meals? I am fed up with ordering a meal that is too big for me to eat and paying for it.

Ie regular portion £10.99
small portion £6.99

Rename kids meals and offer them to all and you will find OAPs order them as will people on diets, people who want a smaller portion etc etc

The downside of this is loss of turnover and potential loss of profit so restaurants won't do it.

Blimey - that's a little bit Dickensian!
Reminds me of being at infants school - we had a dinner lady called Mrs Grimshaw who would stand over you to make sure you ate your cabbage: if you didn't eat all your dinner you weren't allowed to have playtime.
I never finish a meal - I always have to leave something, it's a bit of silly quirky thing that I just always do for no apparent reason, but I think I'm entitled to eat/leave whatever I like! Especially if I've paid for it!

People get greedy and it goes to waste. I don't think the restaurant should be charging to make up for it's losses but it makes people think before they go over the top and end up wasting ridiculous amounts of food.

That is the thing - make people think - you can't force them to act, but hopefully by encouraging people to think, they will make better choices.
