Reliable source for replacement non-hp cartridges

I've owned many hp printers before and I have never had problems with using non-hp cartridges in them. I now do and it's a pain.

I have two Officejet Pro 8100s in the office and one of them complains bitterly when I use a non-hp cartridge. Error messages include
"non-hp cartridge used" "previously used cartridge inserted" etc. I've swapped cartridges between printers and the problem moves with the cartridges: the printers themselves seem to be OK.

I had to chuck out a whole set of cartridges this time. I tried to return them, but the supplier refused (and they were outside of the UK anyway). Beyond giving them poor rating on ebay, there's little I can (economically) do

Rather than pay hp's high prices, can somebody recommend a known good UK supplier of refills or third party cartridges?

Have you tried searching the web to see if there is an override?

Printer manufacturers are building these "non original" blocking functions into their printers more and more but sometimes you can get around it. As an example, I have a Brother laser printer - if you put a non-compatible drum in it it complains but on the web, I found a reset sequence I can go through to override it.

There might not be one for your HP but it's worth a search.

There are overrides. This is an example I found:

  • Press the MENU button until the display reads CONFIGURATION MENU
  • Press the ITEM button until the display reads SERVICE MESSAGE = ON/OFF
  • Select OFF*
  • Press SELECT to save
  • Turn printer off
  • Hold the VALUE MINUS and ITEM MINUS buttons while turning the printer back on Hold buttons down until display reads RESET MAINT/COUNT and then release both buttons
Can't promise it will work for you though

I did do a lot of Googling to try and establish what the root cause is and I think the problem in this case relates to the cartridges that were reused.

The printer came with a set of "setup" cartridges which have to be in the device when it is switched on for the first time. These have a notice on the side saying they are not to be reused. My feeling is that this is what somebody did.

I did finally get the printer to use some of the batch of cartridges I bought, but I had to reject four of them.

The only override I've found for this printer is cartridge protection. This marks a cartridge once it has been used in a printer and prevents it being used in another. It's possible that somebody else had this switched on when the cartridge was used for the first time.
