Recruitment question

Hey all,

As a recruitment consultant my job obviously involves cold calling, apart from the annoyance of being distrurbed whilst at work, what is the major factors of why companies do not wish to talk to us?

Also what are the factors that stop companies from using agencies?

The fact that consultants don't always listen could be a factor....I am a consultant but remember temping at a company as an administrator and lost count of the amount of times I took calls from the same consultants and told them the best times to call were such and such times or that the HR lady was on holiday for 3 weeks (lucky!!) and to email details across. I know that some consultants like to go door knocking aswell but how annoying must that be if several consultants a day do that? I always try to ask when is the best time to call to discuss recruitment, repeat it so client knows I have listened and then stick to calling at that agreed time and date..sounds simple but I know alot of consultants that don't bother...

To be honest i have been on both ends of the spectrum as well, i have found that 8/10 consultants calling had no real purpose for the call other than to top up there phone times, when i asked what they could offer in terms of technical understanding of the position most were dumbfounded to say the least. The second point i would like to make is BE POLITE!!! Please ask if somebody is available to talk, i know in the sales books it tells you not to ask questions that welcome a NO but honestly if you were to ask me "can you talk now" i would give you the time of day when i had a moment.

I normally do one cold call and if i am lucky to talk to who i need to and everything goes well i normally take a email address and then mail them once a week after that to see how everything is going. because of dealing with drivers it can change all the time.

Now if i get a no - i will get the persons name and place it in the contact book to say not to approach. I see it i have done my job at least they have heard of the name and they can contact me if they need too.

No one can force a person to say yes and by calling all the time and putting their backs up they will never come back at all.

One of my old positions they wanted me to do 70 cold calls in the morning and then the next day follow up in the afternoon and keep hammering them. which didnt work and it was only down to the people i knew i got them to sign up to the company.
