Recommendations for Ecommerve solution for single product rentals

Hi, I was hoping that someone could recommend an ecommerce solution for a website that has a single product category which will be available for rental. An idea of functionality required would be 1 - 4 items available to hire in a single transaction with a calender booking system that allows for stock control over a number of days of the week, plus a payment gateway etc.

I initially looked at Opencart as I had a sales based website on that format previously that worked well, but the modules available to allow what I want seem overly complicated and more suited to a property type rental. There appears to be some Wordpress solutions, but I am getting lost in the descriptions and wondered what the simplest solution would be for these requirements, apart from a bespoke design?

Thanks in advance.

Hi @xdiavel666 and welcome to UKBF.

For a single product you don’t need e-commerce. What you need is a booking system with a payment gateway.

If you want to use Wordpress there are plenty of booking plugins many of which have a built in payment portal.

Without knowing what you are renting out it’s difficult to make any suggestions as to which plugin would be suitable.

Thank you for the welcome and advice.

I am looking at renting out virtual reality headsets for events and parties. I might also sell used headsets alongside the rental offering, so an eye on expansion would be great as I may offer other gaming systems at a later date.

If WordPress would be the best platform for this functionality, what are the plugins that give you a checkout system and calendar? I take it that I wouldn't require the WooCommerce module?

Excuse my ignorance with Wordpress as I've never used it.

Many thanks

We're OpenCart Gold Partners so feel free to email us to discuss what can be done: [email protected]

As fisicx says, there are loads of booking systems for WordPress.

But as ever the devil is in the detail. However, this probably isn't a website for self build, the main reason is that rental is a strange ecommerce process. Most booking/shipping functionality is geared towards normal website sales; e.g. you sell a product and ship it, potentially with delivery date picking.

For rental you normally need a completely different model, where you have to arrange shipping dates to a customer and then collection back dates. The pricing of the service/rental is then usually determined by the number of days rental, so this functionality has to exist usually for both pricing and delivery/collection management to work.

If you then mix in normal sales of items, the whole basket/checkout process needs to be able to differentiate between shipping a sold item and a rental item. We've built a few sites along these lines and ended up with bespoke delivery/collection and shipping management, as out of the box most payment/shipping functionality cannot handle this.

Thanks very much for your comprehensive responses.
I would like to put the site together myself as I find this helps when there are issues that can be easily fixed.
I have had a quick look at Wordpress and have found some available templates that have rental and booking facilities built in, which will make it easier and more economical for me, as long as I make the rental functionality simple.
I am going to localise the rentals, so I will service the deliveries and collections initially, then add the facility over time to add a delivery cost via a courier.

    Thanks again

Hi there! If you're looking for an ecommerce solution for a website with a single product category available for rental, I would recommend taking a look at Shopify. Shopify is a popular ecommerce platform that offers a wide range of features and integrations to help you manage your rental business.

Shopify has a built-in booking system that allows you to set specific dates and times for your rentals, and also includes a payment gateway so you can easily accept payments from customers. Additionally, Shopify has a large app store with various apps and plugins that can help you manage your rental inventory and automate certain processes.

Another platform you may want to consider is WooCommerce, which is a popular ecommerce plugin for WordPress. WooCommerce also offers various plugins and extensions that can help you set up a rental business, including a booking and reservation system.

Ultimately, the best solution for your rental business will depend on your specific needs and preferences. I would recommend taking some time to research both Shopify and WooCommerce, and comparing their features and pricing to determine which platform is the best fit for your business.
