Recommend a Comfortable Office Chair?

I currently have one of the old style traditional office swivels that has had its day, and is more than uncomfortable.

Anyone recommend a really comfy one? I can't tell looking on line which look the better comfort wise. Ideally i would like one of the leathery padded ones with side arms. Budget is about £100 max :D, after all it's only a chair...

Comfort is something which one person can't decide for another, everyone is different. Don't panic though MASSEY all is not lost, most places that sell office chairs will let you sit in them.

It's due to time restriction i am asking for a recommendation to purchase one online. Who in their right mind still goes out shopping when we have the internet, are you mad :D

Anyone buying something they want to be comfortable.
If you don't want something specific or particularly pretty then most fat cushioned seats will do I reckon.

I know your situation Massey. I spend 12 -16 hours a day working in my chair, I bought it at viking 19 years ago for £60 - so i tried replaing it a few months ago, found one online that I thought looked great, had a head rest looked comfy, had arm rests, and looked like it had a reasonable amount of recline.

unfortunately when it came the arms didnt fit under the desk, it didnt recline very much, basically was a waste of money as it couldnt use it - spent at least 10 hours searching the net for something suitable.
Im probably going to t have to resort to paying a lot more, and getting something from a shop rather than the net.

I would also be very intrested to hear what others suggest

Well I am mad, but thats another subject. Whats good for one back is probably not good for the next back and so on.

Consider, if you will, the hours spent each day/week/month stuck in an uncomfortable office chair. Then get out into the real world and find a supplier with a big range and go and personally find the best chair.

The investments in time and money on getting the most comfortable chair are worth the effort.

Of the chairs available and there are thousands...it is appalling how badly designed most are.

I am not a chair retailer but do feel they perform a function the internet cannot and 'cheap' is so often a false economy.

    Hello Massey,

I have imported and sold office furniture - seating and desking - for many years now. But only in bulk, so I am not trying to sell you anything!

Its true that in general, you get what you pay for. Though, like a washing machine with 94 programs of which you only use 2 or 3, its quite possible to pay a lot for a quality fully featured chair of which you only use the basic features.

If you are sitting on a chair for 8 hours a day, my advice would be to make sure you get a really good one. £100 is not a lot. It is not only an office chair, its a means to ensure that you both perform effectively and maintain long term health. And you want it to last for how many years? How much do we pay for footwear over the same period? I have found that many consumers are not aware of the increased comfort available from better seating, as they have only ever experienced 'inferior' chairs.

Most on line stores sell by price. Its hard to differentiate by looking at the pictures, so price is the dominant factor. To achieve lower selling prices, lower cost prices are required. Comfort and durability are sadly, way down the list of priorities. So foam thickness, seat width, base dimensions, steel thicknesses all get smaller.

I would rather buy from an office furniture specialist than someone who was a jack of all trades. You will find these local to you if you try.

Also note that leather comes in several grades. You will be getting split leather if you pay £100. (Google it to find out what it means). And leather does not just come from cows. Fabric or mesh are far better for temperature and sweat than split leather.

Your size also matters. Gas lifts vary in capacity. The cheaper the chair......

A cheap chair that you spend a large portion of your life in at work is right up there with a cheap suit

    Invest in your bum !

I do agree with your point but he obviously put a max price for a reason. If thats what he wants to spend, thats what he wants to spend.

I dont think Massey is an office dweller anyway, I think he may actually have a proper job where you actually go out and do stuff, what a weirdo:D

Massey, maybe you travel a lot if you are so busy? You will find office furniture showrooms all over the country. I cant recommend any as you are not in my area, but google office furniture showrooms birmingham and you will get a few. Try before you buy.

He is a builder who often posts on here during the day - he can find time to go and buy a chair.

You have to try a chair for comfort.

most of the cheaper ones are crap in that area.

Expect to pay £500 for anything half decent.

    Earl

Agree 100%. Budget Office chairs, in general, look and feel from hell .

How do they manage to make these ridiculous chairs and more to the point sell them ?? You just need to look at them with their short arms and smart-ass backs to know they are gonna kill you short term and goodness knows what they will do to your posture long term.

Its probably why the average UKBFER is aged 22. Most have retired with back ache before they are 24. You need to spend good money on a decent chair as Sir Earl says. Mind you he is probably using his to watch re-runs of Bergerac as well as working...

Gotta to agree - you need to be comfy - we just bought 3 new ones and had a mass outing to try them on.....everyone is different, and even if you are only in it for an hour, it can kill your back!

One of the reasons we went shopping for new ones was I took over on reception, after 30 mins I was uncomfortable, after an hour I had to stand and walk around to relieve the pain in my btm and thighs.....an hour later and the chair was consigned to the 'tip run' pile in the warehouse......I apologised to the usual user of the seat - and she said ' well, I always said it was a bad chair'!

There is an advert for something on TV, can't remember what, but the tag line is 'love your bum' - it definately applies to office chairs. The mesh ones btw are very comfy from Ikea....but that just MY opinion!

Thanks for the input. I'm not an office dweller as mentioned so don't particularly need the creme de la creme of chairs.

Earl you're sitting on a 30 pound argos one you are :D

If you dont use it much then you can have just about any style/features. Do you want the colour to match the room its in?

PM me if you need a pointer to what I think (no guarantee) are reasonable chairs - that are not supplied by me!

I dont have a chair recomendation but somethings might help in being able to afford a more expensive (and hence maybe more comfy) chair.

take a look at topcashback co uk you can get 15% cash back from the retailer euroffice, which is in turn giving new accounts a 20% discount... thats a 32% saving
and they have a wide range of chairs - over 300 i think. but the offer ends in 6 days.

another option is the same site (topcashback ) is doing deals on staples office furnature 9%off, you might be able to go and try out some chairs then buy online, I think that offer ends soon to though

The one from Ikea that's about £50. I have a few here and they are just great. And I have a bad back (upper and lower).

    *crawls underneath chair*

    The model name is Verner.

So everyone told me one of the most comfortable chairs you can get for your office was the Herman Miller Aeron chair.

But then I looked at the price of £950 and decided against it.

Then they told me it was the best chair you can buy for your back and it will be worth it in the long term.

So I searched for and found a second-hand one for a couple of hundred quid.

What do I think? It seems to be good for my back. But it is definitely not the most comfortable chair I have had. I suppose its relative stiffness and hard seat puts me in work mode, but I am pleased to get out of it after a long day.
Couldn't sleep on it, that's for sure.
