I advertised my Nokia E71 on gumtree and this woman e-mailed me saying she will send me the money over paypal. In return, I have to send the item to her newphew back in Nigeria. I said that's fine but I'm totally new when it comes to paypal.

Got an e-mail from her today asking me to check my e-mail because the money already been deducted from her account. Check my e-mail and I did receive some e-mail from paypal saying I have to post the item then e-mail the reference number for me to get paid.

Is this normal? feels bit weird to me. like I said, I'm totally new when it comes to paypal.

I think the outcome will be her "he never sent me phone" you "yeah i did" paypal "refund the buyer" you "gutted".

Send them a dodgy link in an email they will click it, use the a url shortner to help disguise it. You might as well get a little satisfaction out of scammers.

When you log into your own paypal account I doubt the money will be there, if it is it will be refunded a couple of days later, only ever send to the registered address on the paypal account.

Ohoh, I'm getting worried now. Everyone is telling me not to send it. Its too good to be true I guess. I advertised it for £100 and she offered me £130+£30 P&P.

Here are some of the e-mail she sent me:

Hello,

right now okay?did you agree with my offer?do get back to me with your
paypal e-mail address for instant payment okay?
Regards.

I have just made out the payment online now and the fund has been
deducted from my paypal account okay?
Go and check the mail you used in opening your paypal account the
confirmation mail have been sent there check the inbox or the spam
message you should see it there........
So, pls get the Item shipped via Royal Mail to the following
address
below.
Name : Esuru Moses
Address :No 1,Tade Sokeye Str,
City : Abeokuta .
State : Ogun State.
Country : Nigeria
Zip Code : 23439.
Let me know as soon as you get the item shipped and also send the
shipment tracking number to paypal e-mail address at
[email protected] so that they will be able to
credit the fund into your paypal account instantly okay?I also want
you to delete the item off Gumtree right now ....
Regards.

I gona ring up paypal about this

They haven't even sent the money - paypal always pay before you send it, they never pay after you've sent them a number. They've just made the email themselves.

I still haven't phoned paypal yet but had few other "offers" from different people. Im going to ignore that woman because it sounds dodgy. I should've make it clear on my ad that its cash only. Good thing I asked:) thanks everyone

Tell me if you manage to find their number - paypal's known for their appalling lack of customer service!

It's not dodgy, It is a scam :(
Please make sure you sell it face to face & accept cash, ideally low denomination notes!

Always take care while dealing with Nigeria customers or company because very few of them are genuine.

I think it is very unfortunate to put it in those terms. My uncle is a proud man and is deeply affected by it and from my perspective, I do alot of business in Italy and I find alot of that dodgy.

I have a friend who sells phones and when I was in his shop, a black male or female would come in and he would say, 'here we go, wont sell anything here.' I schooled him on the fact the personal questions were politeness and not intrusiveness and the bartering was largely jocular and an imperative. Nigeria is actually a fantastic market for phones and he started selling all his older models to people coming in who sent them home. He got to deal face to face so removed the risk, but there are ways and means to protect yourself at a distance.

Struth, how many times does someone have to be told it's a scam, a well known and not very clever one at that.
