I'm about to purchase a new domain name and want to purchase co.uk

Do I need to have my personal details made public as the owner (e.g. whois)?

Is it acceptable to use a co.uk domain for something business related but not a business as such?

If the domain name is for personal use, you can select WHOIS privacy when registering the domain name. You cannot do that if you are using it for a business (although some try it, Nominet will reveal the address after 24 hours if someone complains about it).

You can use the domain name for any (legal) reason you want - business or otherwise. There are not restrictions.

123-reg are asking a bit extra for privacy (I think) is this the norm?

I actually looked at your links to see what you do but missed the fact that I could purchase a domain name through you! Thanks for pointing that out.

If you buy a co.uk domain then you need to display some details but you could put this as a company or use a service address.

If you buy a .com then you can totally protect your privacy.

I see that you are buying with 123reg - but I recommend crazydomains.com

They have .co.uk domains at £2 and often have sales on .coms at £1.50

You can even transfer you current domains before they renew and get a lower renewal price with them.

We just had a lot of fun with this and Nominet.

Although we registered it with domain privacy turned on, when our registrar registered it, it was off so the details were made public. We had to contact Nominet directly to get them to turn it on.

So, depending on your provider, you might have your details visible for a short while between registration and changing its state via Nominet.

We've found a lot of US domain registrars only offer a "half baked" domain service for .uk domains. Changes such as nameservers or IPSTAGs have to be done manually. With some of them, their systems simply aren't geared for the way Nominet works.

How much would someone charge for hosting a very small website? It only has two pages at present.

You can get it from free upto £100's, a decent UK based host will charge in the region of £15-£40 per year for a bog standard hosting account.

It's it's just 2 static pages then I'd suggest hosting it for free with the company you registered the domain with, presuming they offer this (most do). Otherwise, any kind of shared hosting account will accommodate you.

The website will be more for referral and so the cheaper the hosting the better.
