Protecting a recipe

I'm trying to sort out whether protection of a recipe for petfood is protection of the idea of this particular type of petfood, or protection of the recipe itself. The ingredients are widely available as is the production process.
What is it exactly that I can protect.
Would be grateful for some clarification.
Thank you.

Simple answer: no you can't.

A competitor could recreate the product but add in one ingredient or slightly change the proportions and sell it under their own name. That's how we have so many variants of baked beans for sale.

The protection of a recipe for pet food typically depends on the level of originality in the recipe. Generally, ideas and concepts can't be protected, but the expression of those ideas or concepts may be protected through copyright law. Therefore, you may be able to protect the recipe itself, given that it contains enough originality and creativity. However, if the ingredients and production process are widely available, then protection may be more difficult.

Copyright only protects the written expression of the recipe. You can't use copyright to prevent someone reverse engineering and reproducing the recipe.

Much like 'phone directories. Anyone could produce a 'phone directory as the data ('phone numbers) is (mostly) public domain factual information. What you couldn't do was copy BTs presentation of the data.
