Promoting Content - where?

Hey Guys, How do you promote your blog posts? I currently share to facebook, I include a statement and a question on the facebook post and share the link the the blog, facebook is linked to twitter so it posts on that too!

What else can I do to market/promote my content? I want as many people to read/.share as possible.

I also want to get this particular article up in the search engines.

The best way to promote your blog posts in my opinion is to focus entirely on your blog. Meaning SEO (search engine optimization) and there are ping services you should attach to your blog, so as soon as your blog goes live, many different directories, search engines and such will recognize it faster. I run a blog myself and the majority of readers and "eye balls" I got on my blog posts in the beginning was due to posting frequently and focusing on my site mainly. I think 60% of my readers come straight from Google. But you're on the right track with Facebook and Twitter, but it can be challenging on there if you're follow count isn't high. Use pinterest to pin your posts this has worked hugely for me. Pinterest also has analytics too so you can check statistics. Also try stumble upon for your blog posts. Can bring in decent traffic. And lastly, yahoo answers. Hope I didn't say to much!

I keep reading its a good idea to write articles or info dumps elsewhere and link back to myself, but surely that kind of obvious tactic would get picked up and not deliver any sort of traffic anyway?

If I am wrong, then thats another way!

I use WordPress for my blog, and with WordPress most of them are built in already. I'm not to sure about how you'd do it with other systems. What system are you using? Try pingler, it's a popular ping service. If you check out the site the information and instructions should be there! I think you have to do it manually each time with pingler though

Hi!
Get on Google+ as well. Also, if you have a business blog, LinkedIn wouldn't hurt at all, and even Quora.
But actually, I would strongly recommend email marketing. Have you ever thought of sending newsletters to your readers? It brings great results to your site traffic and it's very cost efficient!

All the best!

Hey,

there are quite a few places where you can promote your content. However, before you do that, prepare your content to be shared on various platforms.

Since you write blog posts, you should also prepare some visual elements for it. I would suggest creating a simple presentation with the key ideas that you want to explain in the blog post.

For example: here's a presentation about growing traffic through facebook: I think I can't yet post any links. Oh just search for "growth hacking on facebook" on slideshare. There's a ton of presentations about that. Imagine you wrote a blog post with the same content and a few pictures.

The best thing about power point presentations is that they are quite easy to make, but more importantly, when you save it you can also save it as separate images for each slide.

Then comes the leverage.

1) Share your blog post on your twitter, facebook accounts.
2) Join a few linkedin groups where like minded people share interesting things. Comment on some stuff other people post. A few days later post your own blog post.
3) Share your blog post on Reddit. Do that in appropriate subreddits though. If you write about marketing, post in in reddit.com/r/marketing, if it's about technology do that in reddit.com/r/technology. You get the idea. Make sure you post it in a few different subreddits. 4-5 should give you a good start.
4) Share it on stumbleupon.com
5) Share it on scoop.it
6) Submit it to delicious.com
7) Submit to digg.com

8) Someone mentioned submitting on Quora. Yes, you can do it, but do it strategically. Create your own blog on Quora and then repost your own blog post on there. Simply submitting a link to your post on random answers will seem like spam. We are humans, we have a perfect smell for spam and we hate it. Don't you?

Besides Quora, you can actually create a whole bunch of free websites on:
9) blogger.com
10) wordpress.com
11) wix.com
12) tumblr.com

If you want to use these options - it's up to you.

13) After you're done sharing your blog post, don't leave it like that. You're not done. Yet. Share the pictures from your blog on your facebook and twitter again. But more importantly, share it on your own tumblr.com blog. Tumblr'ers love visual stuff.

14) So do Pinterest users, so share your images on Pinterest too.
15) Finally, remember I said create a powerpoint presentations from the content of your blog post? Share it on slideshare.net.

16) You can also share your presentation on speakerdeck.com
17) Finally, you can talk the presentation through and record a video. Share that video on Youtube.

The best part is - you can share both, the presentation and the video on all these places I mentioned before.

With a simple google search you can find a ton of niche blogs and forums, where you could potentially shear your blog post as well.

However, instead of promoting your content anywhere you can, I would focus on Reddit, Twitter and 1 or 2 niche groups on LinkedIn. More importantly, I would focus on asking for feedback and then improving your content based on that feedback.

It takes time to develop an ability to create good content, but once you can do that - it's magic. People will take your content everywhere I mentioned and further. Automatically.

Hope this helps.

OP I think that you may be approaching this with the wrong mindset.

You don't want "as many people to read your content as possible", what you really want is as many of your target audience to read your content as possible.

So, if you think about it logically, you would want to promote your content where your target audience 'hang out'.

That could be facebook, twitter, or any number of sites, but without knowing who your target audience are, there's no point in making any suggestions.:)

Or even...

Do you want people to read your blog posts or do you want them to buy your stuff?

Getting a post to rank well is easy if you write about stuff that people are searching for and for which there isn't a lot of competition. No need to ping or do SM linking or anything. Google will normally pick up and index new blog posts in minutes after publication.

You need to have a multi-pronged strategy to promoting any content, no matter how good it is.

At Content Chefs, we rely on various methods, but it needs to be a bespoke method for whatever niche you are perusing.

As an example we tend to use;

1) Social media interaction - i.e. targeting and contacting relevant, authority figures for the relevant industry and getting them to look at the content and promote it.

2) Web2.0 promotion methods - pushing content to StumbeUpon or gaining the interest of users on sites such as Reddit or Pinterest can be invaluable

3) Forum discussion and interaction - you need to find out where your target audience lives online and engage them in discussions around your content. You can drop links here to help improve your search engine rankings at the same time, but the ultimate goal is to engage.

4) Email marketing - if you have any email lists, you can promote your latest content to your email list, as long as you have permission and the content is relevant for them.

5) Guest posting - Guest post on relevant blogs and plug your latest content

6) Content Sharing sites such as Visual.ly

There are many, many options for this. But you need to take an approach that reaches your target audience first and foremost and it needs to be on a multi-pronged level to ensure that you gain as much interest as you possibly can.

Always remember, that although Twitter and Facebook are hyped up as being great for gaining interest, the CTR for both is usually extremely low - sub 0.5% and so you can't rely on this to spread the word.

I hope this helps. Drop me a line if you have any other questions or want any guidance!

Not always. Great content properly targeted will get traction without any promotion.

But you still need to ask the question: what do I want to acheive? If it's to sell more stuff then an advert can get you a far better ROI than all of your suggesytions.

That is very true, but there's no harm in taking a multi-pronged approach from the outset, it can only improve it's distribution.

An advert may be able to achieve a better ROI in the very short term, but the nature of an advert is it's temporary. Inbound marketing is a long term strategy that should bring you a more permanent source of traffic and therefore a better ROI in the long term, obviously if it's done correctly. It should also help widen your reach and improve your brand recognition. If you try and do this through advertising, you could end up spending a lot of money, quite quickly.

Let's not forget that all these channels only require time as well (as indeed the content does as well), there's no outlay of money.

Pay yourself a wage and it does cost you money.

Clients story:

£10/day on adwords generates £400/day business. Two hours per day doing all the things you suggests means two hours of lost production which costs a lot more than £10. They are a tradesman so don't have the time or the skills (or inclination) to spend time on SM, forums, guestblogging etc.

That's a fantastically good client story, and a 4000% return (assuming revenue) is clearly an exception. Even Google's own figures only suggest a 200% return and most businesses can't even make adwords work.

For £10 a day you could easily have some really good content created and promoted for your site. I know where I'd rather spend my money. But I fully take your point that it depends on your business and what you're trying to achieve, however as the thread was about content promotion, that's the question I was addressing.

Just out of curiosity, do you have a really good FREE product e.g. EBook that is related to your blog subject/niche that you can promote/give away on your website?

The reason I ask, is because there is a way of adding videos to your Facebook fanpage whereby you can get people to:

Like (before they watch the video)
Like (after a period time of watching the video)
Share (before watching the video)
Click a link in the video to send them to a webpage - i.e. to your free product download

If you create a really good PDF EBook, you can put your affiliate links in the EBook to make money.

The Facebook video will go viral because people have to Like, or Share it to get the information, then you tell them in your fanpage information to click on the link in the video to get the free Ebook, this will take them to your site.

You could (but it may turn some people off) then ask then to fill in a email form on your website to get the free Ebook. (this is a way of building your customer list). Your FREE Ebook has to be of real quality and value before people will enter their name and email info, or you could just allow them to download it.

If you go to Facebook and type in

grand-theft-auto-5-guides-for-sale/657205514304324

You will see the videos in action

Alternate story... :D

We built a number of sites with content, focusing purely on 'free' SEO. For the last 4 years or so we've done nothing other than maintaining the site, but sales continue and in most cases have increased with no action from us. All at 'no' cost...

If your client stops paying, then their income stops... (or at least that portion).

I was on a webinar with these guys last month - it was really useful and i learned loads about online marketing in general. They covered content marketing, social, email and seo - and other stuff as well.

Id recommend it for anyone responsible for their own marketing... I thought I was doing a good job, but it was surprising how many little tips I got.

I cant post the link here because of the forum rules... but if you go to facebook and you find the company there (GNTMedia) and there is a link to the session on their page. Or twitter, their ID is gnt_media

If you want to promote content then social media, blog posting, article submission and guest blogging are the best options for you.

I thought I could use video responses but Youtube has disabled that feature...
