Could anyone tell me how private reg plates work? can I go and make or order one that no one has made yet so I don't have to pay a silly price? or do I have to buy ones that are already made which means I cant make my own ones that no one came up with?

Thanks

DVLA got wise to the vast sums being paid, so now don't issue the special ones that easily made names, and they sell them themselves. The only real rule is you cannot put a number plate on your vehicle that makes it appear newer than it is. Older is fine. You also have to pay to transfer them when you sell the car and buy a new one. You also cannot change the spacing. They introduced rules that stop dealers making illegal plates - you can still get them on the net, but not from your local Halfords or main dealer!

If you do want to transfer a plate from a person that you know then this should be possible provided thaqt the caqr that the plate is coming from is roadworthy and taxed you can not a plate from a scrapped or unroadworthy car.

It looks as though you will have to pay however you do it.

If you order your reg number online (we host a number of sites offering this service), there are thousands to choose from depending on what you want. When my husband ordered ours, we had a certificate confirming authorisation to use the reg number and then we had the plates made up locally. You will have to pay to have it applied to your car though I believe so consider this when purchasing. It cost me £80 to have it put on my car even though it had not been previously registered.

I think that's one of the laws that the boys in blue turn a blind eye to.

If you watch programmes like Police Interceptors or Traffic Cops I think that you'll find that's not true. Mispresented registration plates can thwart ANPR systems and I've seen several tickets dished out on programmes in the last couple of weeks. No idea when they were recorded, of course.

Yes I think those plates with spacing/altered lettering a complete joke.

Either spend proper money on a decent plate that doesn't need messing with or don't bother, simple as.
