Ive just had some business cards designed and im unsure how they will print as ive seen some cards with similar colour schemes look a bit rubbish.

Is it cheeky if i ask a printer to print off 1 or 2 so i can see them beforehand? Obviously i will be using that printer to do the full run but im just wondering if that does happen?

Most printers would probably be happy to produce a sample for you to check before ordering the full run. Try contacting some local print firms.

You could probably ask for a sample print. Try FlyerZone, highly recommend them as they are brilliant!

The problem with print is the majority of the cost is in the setup, not the actual prints.

You might get lucky with a one off sample but many wont bother as they need to cover the setup costs even on digital runs.

I would go to moo.com you can get a good idea what they'll look like on screen, and then their printing quality is phenominal. I honestly personally wouldn't go anywhere else unless they could guarantee they were going to be that good, and that doesn't come with bargain end printers.

Going to property auctions and the like, I've had some terrible mortgage advisor marketing 'bumph' handed to me, it all looked cheap and nasty, and thats what I assumed the service would be like. As it goes, I got my advisor through word of mouth, but that is beside the point

I dont want cheap business cards. I want to ensure the colours work when theyre printed and dry.

One of my old employers had business cards that looked good as a pdf but once printed there was some of the writing that you were squinting to read.

If the colours dont work, then i will get it lightened - but i dont want it too light.

The printer will get the job anyway but i just want to ensure im not paying for something that looks a bit rubbish.

Short of doing some rudimentary test runs on your own inkjet, I suggest getting a short run of a hundred and seeing how they look. Your designer should have put something together that will print properly TBH.

Any printer will provide you a proof, inc a sized version. You can then determine if it's legible or not.

As for bleeding or smudging, it all comes down to the expanse of a colour(s). If there is a large expanse you'll need to have that side coated or laminated. Extra cost but worth it if you want to maintain what you set out to achieve.

If it's a local printing firm, I know that this will not be a problem.
Seems too much hassle for a large online printing company.

There are various companies that provide sample printing of their products. You can ask them to show you their printing samples so that you know how exactly your business cards looks like.
