Printer problems

Since the latest Microsoft update last week, one of my deskjet printers doesn't want to print anymore although it is working for photocopying and scanning.

It won't print any PDFs at all and for other documents it only prints the left third of the page.

I've checked all the printer settings and they are correct. I've checked the HP website for updates and there are none for my printer.

I have another HP printer (an older one) attached to a newer computer which was unaffected except that it is feeding two sheets of paper for every page it is printing which it didn't before the update.

Both computers are running Windows 7 and using Firefox as the browser. I am reluctant to change browsers because everything is working nicely in FF at the moment and not in the other browsers.

Is there anything else I should try or should I just bin it and buy a new one?

You should be able to uninstall the update by going Start Menu, Control Panel, Programs, then Programs & Features. Click on the update then click Uninstall.
When you say that you have to have the updates for Eset to work, does Eset come up with a some sort of error? Also what was Eset doing before the updates?

You might want to go to the printer manufacturer website and make sure you have the latest driver/software for your printer. This may resolve the issue. Many of the printing problems I come across at work are solved by updating the drivers. Just go to HP or whoever made the printer click on support and download driver for your version of windows.
Hope this helps. Microsoft Net Framework is used by other bits of software so I would be wary of deleting that. Try the drivers first. :)

That was the first thing I tried - there were no driver updates available.

Don't know if you've already tried System Restore or not, but if not, you'll need to make sure you picked the right restore point, i.e. BEFORE the NET update obviously. You should also be able to uninstall the update as I suggested previously, after all, if the printer was working fine before..... Also, I'm curious as to why Eset wouldn't work, after all, I'm guessing it was also fine before the change?

There is no danger in uninstalling the update, you can put them in date order to make sure no other updates were installed on the same day. ESET will not rely on a Windows Update to perform on access and other scanning duties. It may however have a module that monitors whether your Windows updates are current which is quite unusual in itself!!
