Prestashop - Opencart Question

Hi everyone,
How many products can either of these platforms comfortably support for an ecommerce website? We currently have around 8000 products which will gradually increase as new products come along, so can see us reaching 10,000 within a couple of years, depending on how the business progresses, we may aim to have supplier feeds installed.
 
We have been told by a web agency that Opencart 10/12000 and Prestashop 20/25000, as we were considering migrating over to Opencart this worried us that we would hit the limits to quickly. I appreciate that as the store gets bigger and hopefully more customers, we would have to consider moving over to a higher spec server, as in a dedicated server.

The ymay be referring to the server or how well opencart handles at anyone time I suppose, but in theory theres no limit as such, presta or open isn't going to say "sorry your full" but it's down to how the servers can handle etc, we have done a 38,000 product setup without any need for extras, but then we don't use Presta or Opencart

Yes, i think he was concerned about how the systems handles the quantity, as he said that you could hit 12000 products before you see any affect on the site. But they own there own servers, so you would have thought if it was that side of things he would of simply said that you would be better going over from shared hosting to a dedicated server! Hence why i'm asking the question as obviously i dont want to migrate to a platform that will hinder us in years to come. What platform did you set up the 38000 product site on?

So in your opinion Opencart/Presta would have no problems as long as we upgraded our hosting along the way.

Sorry couldn't say for sure, we dropped presta and the likes sometime ago, but in theory if you have the right servers etc, however I don't know ho presta or open processes are, how code rich they are, so can't say for sure, but the server would help

Oh right ok, thanks for your input and i'll wait to see if anyone who has had any experience comments.

Nothing to worry about the product count for any of the Ecommerce application you select only thing you will have to increase is hosting resource as your traffic and product increase.. some basic things you need to work is avoid plugins that's are not necessary as this can cause server end resource utilization issues which we have seen with many customers. And few work of mysql optimization will help speed up the website.

Absolute nonsense, they're plucking random numbers out of the air.

What's more important is how powerful your server is and also what caching extensions you're using i.e.:
Avoiding any poorly written extensions or custom code will be important and you could use CloudFlare to increase speed and reduce load on the server further.

Thank you Antropy, my gut feeling when i heard him say this, was that nowhere in my research about Opencart has it come up about product quantities, just wanted to be sure.

I'd basically narrowed it down to OpenCart, but upon visiting a local webdesign company to discuss our needs, he left me feeling unsure.

We will be migrating our website with around 8,000 products, 30,000 orders and 25,000 customer records. I thought he would be able to migrate over most this info, but he has said they would 301 redirect only 1000 products! (shouldn't you redirect all products for SEO and google) and would not migrate the customer info or orders, we could just place our "old" website on there servers and access information when we needed it!

This was not how i imagined it would go and it left me feeling, was Opencart not the right choice or were my expectations to high.

Yes you should and it sounds like they've put that limit there because they will be doing it manually, which probably isn't the right way to do it. What's your current site built with?

So when customers log in they can't see their previous orders? That's not right either, we usually transfer this sort of data across to a new site.

Well the limitations you've been told about aren't anything to do with OpenCart, it sounds like they're more the limitations of that particular agency.
