PPC v organic analytic question

Hi all,

I have been monitoring stats recently as my adwords campaigns have been questionable... although I have checked with adwords staff who went through my account and told me things were ok.

However, take for example last weeks analytics, average visit duration for organic was 11.37 mins compared to PPC 1.13mins.

I feel there must be something amiss here still, I've looked at keywords, ads and landing pages and nothing shouts out at me... so why would visitors be spending longer on site organically?

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks

Hi Simon,

Thanks.

Yes, I have negative keywords included. Also, if I look at clicks on keywords and ads... they seem more than relevant to landing pages. I feel there may be a problem though, even though adwords team says there isn't.

11.37 minutes is really long for an average web visit, so it may say more about the profile of your organic traffic!

Some things to check:
Is the average visit length being skewed by a few very long /very short visits?
Are you excluding your own traffic, plus your developers, home PC, etc?

You also need to compare landing pages - you may get long dwell times on a blog page, but they tend not to make much money on them. A direct 'sale' page usually has less content, so time on page will be naturally lower, but will actually convert better. If your search/ppc traffic is a different intent profile you will get different results.

Do check your ppc traffic in as many ways as possible: keywords, locations, referring sites (if using content network), search partners, etc, and see if there is a segment that's noticeably worse.

Lastly, set events for all positive outcomes - form submits, call tracking (like ResponseTap), email link clicks and try to get a measure of conversion rate from PPC - it may give you some groups not worth chasing, or highlight that the low time on page is not a problem.

Unless it's a membership site, there's something very strange about people spending an average of 11 minutes on a site. What are they all doing that takes 11 minutes?

Thanks all... I have since learnt today that the time on site does include visits from my PC and I have recently spent A LOT of time here... so I think thats probably answered the question.

Thanks for the offer of help makeusawebsite... but I think this probably explains it hopefully :)
