Postal Costs

Hello All,

I am right now using the wonderful delight that is Royal Mail with stamps etc hmmmmm...

I am now looking to remove myself from these based on the service, prices etc - I have looked into UKMail, Whistl and another company but all 3 use Royal Mail as the delivery agent which is frustrating.

I am going to invest in a Franking Machine with MailMark.

Be interested in your feedback on what you use yourself for your postal needs and again any advice on franking machines.

You don't say what you are trying to send.

I send bulk letters several times a year and use CFH Docmail.

I would never consider a franking machine.

Personally I use RM - mostly signed for, sometimes ordinary second class (which seems to perform exactly the same as first class)

My usage is frequent either than heavy.

I think the service is brilliant- the Post Office experience, less so.

I use a mixture of Standard & Large Letters not normally more than 250g.

I send about 500 per month give or take, sometimes its more but 500 is a rough average.

Why don't you see if you can get a Royal Mail account? Cheaper than franking and no expensive machine.

I agree - don't use a Franking machine the amount you save per letter is more than eaten in associated costs (like the ink cartridges)

Defo don't get a franking machine unless you are doing hundreds of letters every day. If doing small parcels ( ie under 2kg) I would recommend going with RM Click and Drop based on a business account. Integrate the Click & drop with our sales platforms (Ebay, Website etc) and use a Zebra thermal label printer that uses free labels provided by RM.
If you use 2nd class you get tracking and you can claim for lost mail and it's just a quick as 1st Class 8 times out of 10.

If you do opt for a franking machine read the contract very carefully, particularly with regard to replacement ink cartridges and de-commissioning costs (if any).

I've always found RM Special Delivery an excellent and reliable service - though not cheap and only appropriate for reasonably high-value items.

Hi there! You’re going to want to buy by telly sales and not face to face. This is because telly sales have the better offers, face to face are not given the same discounts! For the machine, only expect to spend around £20 for the machine and around £50-£70 for the ink per month. Don’t be fooled if you’re told to use the same brand ink as the machine, and that you “have to” because you don’t! Any brand ink will do. Be aware of hidden charges and extra maintenance. All the mail is delivered by Royal Mail mo matter who you use !
It is like not being able to chose your water supplier !

Any other method or carrier is a lot more expensive

I’ve just opened a parcelforce business account, expecting to reduce my postage costs on the thirty or so packages I send via their normal non account portal. With the rewards for you discount my most common parcel is 6.21. The account price, with the mileage penalty makes this about 6.80 and one of my parcels is a tube, 130x10x10cm, 1.6Kg. I can’t send this via the account, but I can via the on line anybody system. I sell quite a bit to Northern Ireland and the account system charges extra for going over the water, the public system doesn’t. I’ve not yet found any parcel that works for me. Heavy and bigger ones that cost me 12 pounds plus, are cheaper, but for my usual size and weight items it’s proving pointless.
