If it is the Olympic 2012 post you are referring to I've just checked and it was removed by a moderator because it is purely an advertising post.

In these cases and other similar if we were to PM everyone that we deleted a post we would need three times the number of moderators working 24 hours a day so we explain by exception not rule.

(everyone should ensure that they are fully aware of the forum rules but not many bother to read;):))

Whilst I understand what you are saying Alpha, it doens't hurt to take 3 mins to tell a member why their post was removed, especially if the member concerned has a few hundred posts to their name and its obviously not a spammer.

We have the same problem on a forum we run, but at the end of the day it saves you asking around the mods as to why it was removed and then replying to a thread like this ;)

I would agree. Unless a member would be banned for spamming (like chinese spam bots) then a quick PM should be sent explaining why the post was removed.

This also means members learn lessons so they don't do things like that again so really, it may help with the moderation load.

The moderators have too much to do to reply to silly spammers.

Edit - Rephrase: The moderators are already far too busy to reply to every single silly spammer on these forums. If they did, we would see a rise in the spam posts here and less action from the moderators. Plus, one reply never really resolves the situation and you'll probably find most users send a reply back to the moderators message expecting a private debate about it.

Instead, don't spam. It's easy! :)

Thank you MGSteve, plus I have been a member for ages.

So have I ... but guess what, I have never had a post deleted for spam ... well I did that woman thing and read the rules unlike you fellas, so know what is accepted and what aint!

Scott, do you really think the mods should do the job of what is told when you first join ... ie read the rules and all will be hunky dory!!

Gawd, thought they were mods ie here to ensure things don't get out of hand, didn't realise they had to wipe certain peoples arses too!

Message to moderators,

If you remove a post, please be kind enough to give a reason. Send at least a PM.
...plus I have been a member for ages.
I'm sure Michael won't mind me posting this, but I'm the mod who removed the thread. I'm still learning the etiquette of this role, so I've taken his comment on board. As Alpha mentioned earlier, it's just not possible to send a PM explanation for every deleted post; however, Michael is right to point out that he's an established member and a short PM wouldn't have gone amiss.

I mentioned in another thread that, as I get into this role, I'll likely be coming back sometimes to admit that I could have done things better, and this is an example of that.

I've had loads of posts deleted without an explanation!!!

Not one of 'em was spam!!!!
I've noted this precedent too: I shall feel free to remove posts from tea-drinkers without warning or explanation. :)

Same here, I'm sad to say.

I had two posts in this thread (http://www.ukbusinessforums.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=107628) which I specifically remember making as its when I found out about the edit time out.

PLEASE MODS - When you delete a post that is not SPAM, PLEASE tell members why its been deleted. If we don't know we are doing something wrong, how are we supposed to know if you just delete the post and don't tell us!!?

I have just checked the thread in question following the link and there are no deleted posts on that thread.

A mod certainly wouldn't have been able to notify you of something that didn't happen;):)

Well Alan, I'm certainly not imagining posting two replies, one of which I had to put as a reply because I found out I couldn't edit it!

You can hard delete posts you know, not just soft delete.

We are faced with a number of options
1. do nothing (we get complaints about spam and off topic posts) :(
2. Delete the content and leave a note on the forum saying 'post deleted for spamming' (we get complaints from the person who made the post about being humiliated)
3. Delete the post and don't notify the OP (we get complaints about posts being removed without explanation)
4. Remove the post and send brief PM to OP (we get complaints by Pm about the validity of the moderating) this then takes up time, and as a result mods leave and we are back in to point 1 above :(

On my rugby forum, I have had mods resign, and new mods quit instantly because of the abuse they got when trying to do the right thing and Pm anyone they edited. the barrage of abuse is chronic, people never accept theya re in the wrong. And mods are volunteers who do it for the love of the forum/industry.

I know it is tough, but that unfortunately is how it has to be, otherwise there will be no moderators and we are back to spam city :(

I refuse to drink anything that is water based, I have seen what fish do in water :)

I understand the frustrations OWG - moderating is a thankless task - and most forums, including this I suspect, if accounted properly valuing moderators time, would be instant lossmakers, which makes the economics a problem

There is a middle ground though.

Which is not to enter into any correspondence but for all that to have a "reason selector" drop down for the mods to use - which automatically sends an email to the person deleted whenever a post goes - which has enough reasons to be descriptive ...all the way from Rude, Abusive, Rant, Spam, language, etc. Doesnt have to identify the mod.

And in the case of the offers rejected , selecting - not unique to UKBF, etc etc - again sending auto email.

With enough permutations of dropdown to say why. It is clear that some people have no idea why they were deleted. Surely selecting from a drop down, all else automated is easy enough for mods to do?

The only infraction (warning) I ever had was for including a starred swearword yet I was not swearing. It is an expression in common use, and hard to say any other way. Yet a thread opened the following day which included a starred swearword in the post title - someone Actually swearing. Seemingly ignored and allowed to stay.- So having rules and sticking to them helps to be seen as consistent
