Hi I worked in a big retail chain for a year and this week i have been suspended with pay I wont go in to detail on my background but due to some personal issues lately I have been going a little off the rails which i know i need to seek support for but different problem anyway after a late night/early morning out i went to work in morning with no sleep and after getting through the day i went upstairs clocked off and went to get my bag and coat unaware that i still had some cannabis in my bag and to say it was an extreme smell is an understatement I was about to leave when the assistant store manager walked in with a smile said ''nice aroma'' (not the point but they are someone who acted like a friend and was no clean individual themselves so hence my shock) he went back out 2 seconds later bought the store manager with him (who himself said he was about to walk out the side door so the asm actively pulled him back to highlight it which again was a slap in the face) and I was then asked if it was me with the cannabis I admitted it was but less then a joint which he did'nt even ask to see and i said i was sorry but was then suspended with pay I have now had an investigation meeting to give an official statement where after i did the store manager who is new to the store pulled me aside and told me that after this that it would move on to a disciplinary hearing where i would more then likely be fired and if i had of told him my situation before he would of offered support instead but it was out of his hands now and if i had said i did not understand the drug laws it would of probably been a lighter action taken so my best option was to resign before the disciplinary meeting because would be better when applying for a new job.

My head is not in the best of places and this is the last thing i needed to deal with im so confused with the twist on the old good cop bad cop routine has really spun me not that what i did wasnt my fault im totally aware of this however im not sure if anyone cares about me or just moving this on quickly and quietly.

My questions
what are my options i know what the store manager has said sounds right but what will that mean if i resign against facing the hearing.

do i still have to work for a month if i resign or will i be an exception because of the reason behind it and will my employment be cut immediately.

If i resign can i still put them on my C.V or will my suspension be made public.

Hard to give accurate advice with such little detail.

The store manager is looking for an easy close to the situation, although you can resign there is no guarantee they will offer a good reference, that said they are unlikely to give a bad one either, maybe more of just a confirmation you worked to/from dates.

You can be let go with immediate effect, normal for gross misconduct, they might let you go immediately but they might not pay you for the remainder of your notice period. You can offer to resign with immediate effect.

Nothing should be made public.

It might be worth reading the companies handbook on it's disciplinary procedures and if drugs is specifically covered for further guidance. At least you have accepted the problem is down to your own behaviour, try to learn from it and leave any recreational drugs well away from the workplace.
