Pet food shop figures

Hi!

I am wanting to open up a pet food & accessories shop, however I am struggling with figures/statistics.

There are no pet food shop’s directly in my town, I have to travel to 2 seperate ones which are over 30 mins to get to each from my house, in the opposite direction from each other.

I have some purchase guides from wholesalers, have got around 8 wholesalers secured so far. However, I don’t know how much dog food would actually sell. I know there is market for it, I know there has been a rise in the numbers of dogs - especially since covid. I have seen people in local community FB groups asking where the nearest pet food shop is as there is none in our town.

I want to provide raw dog food, natural treats, high quality dog foods, and educate people on the importance of dog nutrition and the many benefits of feeding a good quality diet.

Does anyone know of any “buddy systems”? Or know where I can get information that could help me to see if this would be viable? I know nothing is guaranteed, but I need to get a rough idea.

Where do local dog owners buy their food?

We have cats and it’s all done online for a lot less than we can buy in the shops. Maybe there won’t be enough trade to support your shop.

You really need to be doing research to your local area - or catchment

First question - what has made you think that this is a good idea? (Might contain some answers)

We also buy online - our dog has special diet due to pancreatitis - prior to that we used one of the generic pet superstores.

As an independent you really need to fill a specific need or to create some kind of special buzz that makes people want to visit.
