Hi all

I run a plumbing and heating business. On my quotations and invoices I state that I require payment on completion of work. I've recently been told that this is actually illegal and that I have to allow at least 7 days. Can anyone advise if this is true?

Thanks in advance

Who told you this was illegal?

You can set what ever payment terms you like. All my invoices state payment on receipt.

So the work carried out was for a landlord and a letting agent was the ones who requested my initial quotation and and then asked me to carry out the work. It was the letting agent that said uk law states you have to give your customer 7 days to pay. Both my quotation and invoice stated I required payment on the day of completion.

Ask the landlord to show you the legislation where it says you have to give 7 days. They won’t be able to as such a law doesn’t exist.

No. It is rubbish. You can request full payment in advance of starting work if you like.

    From UK.GOV

You can set your own payment terms, such as discounts for early payment and payment upfront.

Unless you agree a payment date, the customer must pay you within 30 daysof getting your invoice or the goods or service.
You agreed a payment date when you included your terms in your quote and the quote was accepted.

I think that what they meant to say was that they want terms of 7 days so that they don't have to be face-to-face with you when they don't pay you for 90 days.

I never met a plumber that didn't get paid on completion of a job, except for when I worked in a large multi-national aerospace company, in the facilities dept, the contractors there were on 30 days, and when I started the have been lucky to get it in 90 days, but we eventually got it down to 30 days.
