Payment Gateway

Can anyone recommend a good payment gateway, I have been advised that Sagepay would be a good idea as I will only have to pay a monthly subscription and around 20p per transaction rather than a % like paypal?

Has anyone had any experience with Sagepay?

A number of our clients use Sagepay and like them - they do have a habit of changing their callback code occasionally without telling anyone but thats just a bugbear of mine

We have used Sagepay for a few years (previuosly called PROTX). Whilst it took a bit of setting up the system works very slick and we have had no problems.

Do you have an internet merchant account set up yet? You need one in order to accept payments via whichever payment gateway you choose.



If you don't, your first stop will probably be your business bank; however, it is worthwhile speaking to online payment providers while you're shopping around for your payment gateway as they have relationships with different banks that they can often leverage in your favour to secure more favourable rates for you.

I recently finished setting up SagePay with two client sites. Only drawback was that client didn't have a merchant account so this delayed everything by a couple of weeks.

Setting up Sagepay was no real problem with the Joomla/Virtuemart sites in question.

Cost is £20 p.m. with a limit on number of quarterly transactions PLUS any charge from your merchant account supplier.

Worth noting that Sagepay quote all figures at a monthly rate but the limitations are based on a quarterly total.

Example - Less than 1,000 transactions per quarter then charge is just £20 per month. Over 1,000 transactions per quarter then charge is £20 per month plus 10p per transaction. This can be a pain if you are collecting subscriptions as you could exceed the quarterly quota in just one month and then you would be paying the £20 + 10p per transaction on the very quiet months as well.

As with all financials - worth doing the maths before you sign up.

We use SagePay's Small Business Service at £20.00 plus vat per month which includes 1,000 transactions per quarter.

You will also need an Merchant Account with someone like Streamline. They charge a percentage of transaction value for Visa Credit & Mastercard Credit Cards and xxp for Visa Delta, Solo and Maestro Cards.

If you are a member of the Federation of Small Business (FSB) well worth contacting them because they have special rates with Streamline.

Finally, make sure your e-commerce package will interface with SagePay.
