Paying For Referrals?

I'm considering paying for referrals which go on to become customers.

Does anyone have experience in partnering with another business or with individuals to do this?

My business helps small and medium sized businesses to get their business seen online locally. I have found several businesses and organisations which work with small businesses and I would like to approach them to with the offer of a referral fee.

Any advice?

Start by building your portfolio or referrals that you can show and gain new customers.
It is also a good idea to organize a Facebook contest where you will offer your services for free for a person who win. You should build a fanpage with a lot of fans thanks to that.

It's not a good way for your business to start. What you can do is manually add local businesses to your directory. Once you have a few thousand listed and start to get traffic you can approach the businesses and suggest paying their for listing.

@extulsftjz paying for leads or referrals is going to give you nothing but a disadvantage. If your service (and your marketing plan) is good, there should be no need to resort to paying for clients.

Does anyone have experience with compensating people for making referrals though? I too would be interested in how other people do this, as a percentage of the deal, flat rate or non-monetary rewards.

We offer a flat-fee for referrals for our Payment Gateway services. Nice and simple using a hard-coded lead tracker. Once the referred client has been live 90 days we email the referrer inviting them to invoice us for the fee, which we then pay via BACS usually.
