Passwords

On the advice of a top member I have now changed all of my important passwords (I think :|). The trouble is that there are 12 of them and they're all like this &U^%%^hgggcchfd12 .... but different

How am I supposed to remember them all without writing them down and is it safe to be remembered by windows?

Any other suggestions ... currently all on a piece of paper next to my PC LOL x

That's the best place for them, away from your pc and not likely to be seen by anyone.

I use passwords that are strong but rememberable, an example is car registrations before 2001 (H123ABC).

For one of mine I use registration - engine size and car model so it 15 letters / numbers and looks like random rubbish to most people.

To download a program that will allow you to securely store your passwords.

The password database will be locked with just one password that you will be able to remember. You then have access to the rest.

If you work on it you will be able to work out how to make it automatically type in passwords when you need to.

if I have to memorise, i use a simple system of numbers and vowells based on the letters of the domain name. This means I don't have to remember any passwords, I can work it out in seconds, mostly at a glance.

E.g. you pick a word. say tomato then you for instance look at the first vowel and last vowel so in ukbusinessforums it is 'u' U = 5th vowel so we have 5tomato 'u is also the last, so we have another 5 = 5tomato5 easy or what.

My system isn't quite that simple it relies on 2 other at a glance factors, but I aint posting them for obvious reasons

Ahhh but how do I know I can trust it ... I have just been scraped ... multiple personalitied and distributed all over the web ... I think I might just stick to a piece of paper ... don't think I'll ever understand or trust the web again but it's a necessary evil ... it's alright for you techie's x

A good way is to use a phrase like

I like to shop at Waitrose

That can then become

1like2shop@Waitr0se

Memorable, long and uses alpha-numerics, characters and upper and lower case.

But 12 different ones !!!!! :| ... nope ...they are totally random but written down in a note book on top of my PC which clearly says "Passwords" on the front ... just in case I forget where I've left it x

I keep mine in a password protected word doc called, Corrigan ebay refund. It doesn't sound like anything interesting and I only have one password to remember.

Best leave a key under the mat before you go out, save them breaking anything on the way in.

Once you have it downloaded and installed/running you can add your usernames and passwords to it.

Then you just set a password for the "safe"
You simply only need to remember the one SAFE password to gain access to all your other passwords ( if that makes sense? )

What annoys me is some services I use wont let you use characters such as % $ & etc - it has to be a straight forward letter and number combination.

Others restrict the password to 8 characters.

So that's a good head start for any cracker

Is it better to use a password safe so you can always copy/paste and not leave yourself open to keyloggers? Or are you making yourself vulnerable by putting all pw in one place online? What happens if your chosen safe haven is hacked?

Who said anything about online? Store it locally, it could even be on a USB key that you remove when not in use.

And like any business critical data - make sure it is properly backed up.

Personally I'm not keen on PC based password safes as I regularly work on 2 laptops, tablet and phone. Can anyone recommend a good online password keeper.

Don't like USB sticks, people tend to carry them around. Not the first I have found and they are very easy to forget leaving them in local library, college computers.

I use a prog called Roboform there are a few different versions

The one I use is called Roboform2GO and it auto fills it in and encrypts everything so it is not stored in plain text etc

it also handles auto filling in of forms (addresses and the like) with multiple identities.

Also when signing up on a website or changing passwords it has an inbuilt password generator which is great as it makes them secure and remembers them for you, and will also paste them into the password and password again fields etc so it is quite clever!

Integrates with other apps also like office, one note, lotus notes etc with no additional setup required.

I only recently discovered it but wish I had started using it years ago as a customer mentioned it to me about 18 months ago and I put it in the "I will look at that at some point draw"!

One of the great things for the 2GO version is that I can take the usb key with me and just plug it in and it adds itself to the browser and I can then have all my bookmarks and passwords wherever I am!

There are other versions also that work solely on your pc
