Paranormal: Yes or No?

Except we have been transmitting for years.

Not really. As I said, it's worth reading the article:

Alien civilizations might be technically capable of contacting Earth, but are only listening instead of transmitting.[101] If all, or even most, civilizations act the same way, the galaxy could be full of civilizations eager for contact, but everyone is listening and no one is transmitting. This is the so-called SETI Paradox.[102]

The only civilization we know, the Earth, does not explicitly transmit, except for a few small efforts.[101] Even these efforts, and certainly any attempt to expand them, are controversial.[103] It is not even clear we would respond to a detected signal—the official policy within the SETI community[104] is that "[no] response to a signal or other evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence should be sent until appropriate international consultations have taken place." However, given the possible impact of any reply[105] it may be very difficult to obtain any consensus on "Who speaks for Earth?" and "What should we say?"

The greatest challenge is the sheer size of the radio search needed to look for signals (effectively spanning the entire visible universe), the limited amount of resources committed to SETI, and the sensitivity of modern instruments. SETI estimates, for instance, that with a radio telescope as sensitive as the Arecibo Observatory, Earth's television and radio broadcasts would only be detectable at distances up to 0.3 light-years, less than 1/10 the distance to the nearest star. A signal is much easier to detect if the signal energy is limited to either a narrow range of frequencies, or directed at a specific part of the sky. Such signals could be detected at ranges of hundreds to tens of thousands of light-years distance.[89] However, this means that detectors must be listening to an appropriate range of frequencies, and be in that region of space to which the beam is being sent. Many SETI searches assume that extraterrestrial civilizations will be broadcasting a deliberate signal, like the Arecibo message, in order to be found.

The only way to make it powerful enough is to focus the signal into a very narrow beam, but then the chance of intelligent life being within that beam is very small due to the size of the universe.

Furthermore, Earth has never really made any sustained attempt to send out powerful enough transmissions for this purpose. No more than a few dozen isolated efforts in total so far.

This means that humans have put far more effort into listening for signals than they have sending them out, so if other civilisations have the same idea, we'll all be doing too much listening and not enough transmitting.

And it's possible that this would be a universally accepted way of doing things for the most part. There have been drives to set up major active SETI schemes, but they're being resisted due to the danger of us revealing our location without having any idea who would find the signal or what their intentions would be.

We'd much prefer to receive first, and then decide whether to reply, so the same might go for every other civilisation out there.

I don't think it's a case of fooling ourselves. It's the fact that we would be conscious.

And if we are conscious self-actualising beings inside a physical simulator what is the difference between that and conscious self-actualising beings inside a physical universe?

The universe is around 14 billion years old, with evidence of the first planetary systems 12 billion years ago. Compare that to our own sun, which is a second generation star, and our solar system which is only 4.5 billion years old.

And? The rates that stars formed after the big bang is roughly known. The rate intelligent life forms thereafter is unknown as all we have a sample of 1. Maybe we got very, very, lucky? But also so what? It's all just speculation without evidence - the subject is the paranormal.

What I'm surprised all the bedroom boffins haven't worked out is that preternatural and supernatural phenomena can't be proven scientifically, because they fail one key scientific test: reproducibility.

    Well what twaddle.

Anything that is observable is open to the scientific method. These phenomena interact with the natural world therefore they can be proven. They apparently happen regularly and frequently enough for people to make money from taking their customers to places where they hang out, so of course they could be shown to exist if they really did.The David Attenborough's team would find it if it was there in days.

You can't have it both ways.

Nothing, in terms of how conscious they are or how valuable that consciousness is.

But somewhere down the line, there will be base reality eventually. It may be the case that base reality civilisations vastly outnumber virtual civilisations, or the complete reverse where the few "real" civilisations have created thousands of simulated civilisations which then create their own and so on.

When you think of how much time, space, energy and technological potential is available to all in existence, the universe could become an unfathomably complicated web of realities and non-realities quite quickly.

There are no real limitations, other than the laws of physics (as we know them right now, at least).

And IF we do happen to be the only advanced civilisation in the universe, and we manage to survive for long enough, we'll probably be the seed which starts everything off. Barring an unwillingness to do so, or our own self-destruction, it is just a matter of time.

In my view, human interstellar travel is far, far less realistic than the idea of being able to create indistinguishable sensory simulations. The number of physical problems such travel raises are significantly larger and more difficult to solve than the task of creating such a simulation.

And? The rates that stars formed after the big bang is roughly known. The rate intelligent life forms thereafter is unknown as all we have a sample of 1. Maybe we got very, very, lucky? But also so what? It's all just speculation without evidence - the subject is the paranormal.

Maybe we did get very, very lucky. There's every possibility of that. We might be the first. The only.

But given everything we do know about the size and age of the universe, and the number of habitable planets there appear to be, there's every chance that we're also one of millions of advanced civilisations, with many of them most probably having indistinguishable simulations if they're more than just a few thousand years more advanced than us.

You seem to side with that being significantly more far-fetched than the idea that we're alone in the universe as an advanced species. I disagree.

It is indeed speculation, but there's no harm in speculating, wondering, and having an opinion either way.

(i.e. if there is alien life, why haven't we found it):

    Because they found us first.
Gort and the team dropped in from the Aldebaran Oblast for
a quick weekend visit and a look around but then quickly discovered that the planet Earth is being run by a motley bunch of
absolute incompetent, unstable A-holes, all with their fingers hovering over their nuclear send buttons.

They returned home rapidly and decided it will be safer
not to reply to any messages.
    Ever.

Idiot, not an insult but a fact.

You think that if something can't be explained it doesn't exist. You've a closed mind that can't even start to comprehend what isn't fed to it.

Now I don't believe we're in a matrix, or similar, but there is every possibility we are manipulated by a greater being (not God) for their entertainment. Prove me wrong.........

I think that's pretty squarely an insult.

You think that if something can't be explained it doesn't exist.

    You really need to concentrate.

Finding the explanation for something happens after the existence of that something has been demonstrated. I'm not sure about you, but I don't feel the need to look for explanations for leprechauns until we have one in a bottle. An explanation might never arrive, but the evidence for the phenomenon must - otherwise you have nothing but an unfounded belief.

You've a closed mind that can't even start to comprehend what isn't fed to it.

Know me that well do you? I get the impression you haven't discussed this stuff much before with someone who has a different viewpoint from you, so I'll trade the usual insult with you about closed minds and then we're quits. You've left your mind so open that your brain has fallen out. Good isn't it?

Now I don't believe we're in a matrix, or similar, but there is every possibility we are manipulated by a greater being (not God) for their entertainment. Prove me wrong.........

We've done this Reba, it's impossible to prove something doesn't exist. That invisible pink stegosaurus in the corner, I believe in it - prove it doesn't exist. That's why the onus is on those that make the claim to provide evidence to support it. A claim without supporting evidence can safely be ignored.

Now, can you explain why you don't believe that we're in the Matrix? How do you know what to believe and what not to believe? How do you decide?

Remove all the matrix stuff and you're left with Descartes and how we know we're real - a really old set of ideas.

I would call the philosophy of existence and whether we know we're real a different topic. We frankly have no idea if we're real, and we are unlikely to ever know.

I'm certainly not trying to convince you that we live in a simulation.

All I'm saying is that it is almost certainly a matter of time before the human race is able to do this, and it's unlikely to be far away. This isn't Star Trek. We're already on the path towards it right now and can see it on the horizon.

And furthermore, the technology powerful enough to create such simulations already exists - our brains. It's a 1.4kg mass which requires 20 watts of energy - about the same as a very small lightbulb.

We have proof of concept of how advanced technology can come - albeit in a biological form and not a silicon-based one. We will certainly be able to harness that in the not too distant future.

So if you think it's likely that ANY advanced civilisation in the universe exists even remotely close to ours, then it's plausible that such simulations exist if they have happened to evolve just a few hundred years ahead of us.

I think if we were speculating about theories of the big bang, or what's inside black holes, or what dark matter is, you wouldn't be so quick to dismiss it as meaningless fantasy. Your rejection of it seems to be based on the fact that you believe it's so unfathomably far-fetched as ghosts or flying unicorns, when it's actually something our great-great-grandchildren will most probably experience.

Let's not forget the 5 megabyte hard drive in 1956:

Eh? You've spent acres of this thread telling us how the likelyhood of us all being in a simulation is very high. (Actually, you started with 1in billions, went to 50:50, then decided it was a near certainty. But let that pass). I've explained that that problem - how we know we're real - is an age old problem and has conclusions that say that we can know and that we are. If you we're interested in why we know we're not in the matrix you might understand why the thought game of simulations and advanced intelligences with infinite processing power is in error.

We don't know whether we're real. Much of what Descartes says is correct, in my view.

The only thing which cannot be doubted is the act of thinking.

It's a question we're unlikely to ever answer with any sort of certainty. All I'm saying is that given the age of the universe, time before our arrival, proof of biological technology and evidence of rapid technical progress amongst our own species, the situation of full sensory simulation and simulated consciousness is an inevitability - unless we decide not to create it or die out before we do.

Therefore, anyone who thinks it's likely that there are many advanced civilisations out there in the universe, must concede that such simulations may have existed for quite some time, and as they are indistinguishable from reality, it boils down to statistical chance as to whether we're in one of them or not.

The odds are 1 in however many indistinguishable simulations exist in the universe. That much is certain. Beyond that, we only have conjecture, but in my own view, given what I mentioned above, I think it's more likely there are lots of them out there instead of none.

I suppose this theory will seem far less fantastical in the next few hundred years when full sensory simulations are created, and we directly experience being in a reality which we can't distinguish from base reality. Then, much like we assume advanced civilisations will have the space ships we've already created, we will wonder whether they already have this technology as well.

If we're not alone, that is, as there's always the possibility that we are, albeit slim.

That is one massive assumption right there! And this is based on our current understanding and based on what we are doing!

The issue I have is that its taken millions of years for intelligent life to evolve. Most theories are based on earths timeline when in fact intelligent life could have already been formed (and become extinct) or is not at the same level we are on Earth.

We don't know what we don't know springs to mind.

That's just one of many possible explanations for the Fermi paradox in Wikipedia. I'd recommend having a read through the page as it is very interesting (well, I find it interesting anyway).

The issue I have is that its taken millions of years for intelligent life to evolve. Most theories are based on earths timeline when in fact intelligent life could have already been formed (and become extinct) or is not at the same level we are on Earth.

This is true. But given that just our own solar system was formed about 8 billion years after the Big Bang, meaning that MANY other stars and planets were born and cycled before earth even appeared, there's a strong possibility that at least some civilisations reached an advanced stage well before us (although they may not necessarily still be around if they share the human race's tendency to walk the tightrope of self-destruction).

Then again, there's another way to look at this as well. We are comparatively quite late to the party when it comes to the age of the universe up to this point (our star is at least second generation). However, the low estimate is that star formation in the universe will continue for at least another trillion years, meaning that we're still within the first 1.3% of the active universe's lifespan.

Perhaps we are indeed the first, and the galaxies may become very busy with civilisations eventually, but we're just too early to see it.

That may also put us in the prime period to examine the universe and its history, as in around 100 billion years, all galaxies outside of our local group will go beyond the cosmic light horizon and vanish from the observable universe. So future civilisations, regardless of how advanced they are, will never know just how many galaxies and stars existed. To them, the universe will seem to consist of only a few dozen galaxies at most.

The Earth is quite probably Thousands of Billions of years old.

It is equally possible that it has been occupied by many different life forms over that time.
    Visitors from other planets.
Looking for a new place to live, just as we humans are pathetically talking about living on the Moon and Mars.

Humans have only been here for a tiny fraction of this Earth time, and humans will eventually cease to exist,
weather and erosion will in turn wipe almost all traces of our existence away, those few traces
that are left surviving, their function will be puzzled over by the next inhabitants.

Just as we are puzzled by the function of those traces left behind by those previous life forms who lived here before us.

The Pyramids are a good example.

These were NOT built by the Ancient Egyptians.

We have all been fed absolute BS about the origins and the construction of the Pyramids,
and how they were built by the Ancient Egyptians, by so-called professors, Egyptologists and ancient historian...."Experts"

180 ton stone monoliths floated 500 miles up the Nile river on soft reed barges from the granite quarries in Aswan.
Thousands of slaves with ropes and wooden rollers pulling the stones across SAND, and then up huge slopes
to put the stones in place.
    Total BS.
    Total insult to anyone's intelligence.

The ancient Egyptians were simple nomadic camel herders and crop growers, just as our own stone age people were.

They did not have the intellect and equipment to lift 20 ton stone blocks hundreds of feet into the air.
Just as we do not have that capacity even now in this so-called industrial age.

All the ancient Egyptians did was to inherit the Pyramids, the pyramids were already there.

Useful for the Egyptians to use as a quarry to build ancient Cairo,
and for successive dynasties to chisel their graffiti all over the buildings and then call them temples.

Interesting to note that all the structures that were buried very deep under the sands,
and recently discovered only by heavy excavating equipment, have no Hieroglyphics chiselled anywhere on the stones at all.
Because the ancient Egyptians never found those buildings that were buried so deep.

The Pyramids are also heavily weathered and eroded by water, as well as later sand blown erosion.

The Pyramids must have been there for at least 100 thousand years, when the entire Sahara was a tropical rainforest,
all on a similar latitude to the Amazon and Borneo rainforests.

It was thousands of years of African tribes cutting down the trees for firewood, goat grazing, making clearings for crops,
that eventually turned the Sahara into a treeless desert.

The Pyramids were not just simple monuments, they were built with amazing 3 dimentional precision for a very specific use,
some very important mechanical or electrical function, that the human mind cannot, and will never grasp.

Like giving a Medieval farm peasant a computer Motherboard, and expecting him to know it's purpose.

There are hundreds of metres of interconnecting tunnels, on several levels, deep under the sands, linking the pyramids,
the whole area was some huge industrial complex.

Out there under the sands of the Sahara desert may well be the remains of other cities.

But the Pyramids are just one of many examples left behind of previous, alien, Civilizations on Earth,
they are the most obvious example because they are right there in humanity's face, huge, and cannot be ignored.

Other examples are in slightly more remote places on Earth.

When it comes to pyramids and the like, I don't know if there's more to it.

However, I wouldn't underestimate what humanity could achieve with tens of thousands of workers in slave-labour conditions over a considerable period of time.

I believe there was a pyramid building experiment in the 90s where a team built a 400 tonne pyramid using basic tools and methods which would have been available at the time. They managed to do it in a few weeks with around 50 men.

If you had 50,000-100,000 men over 20 years (which is a rough estimate for many of the pyramids out there), who knows what they could do.

For me, the confusing part is not the construction itself. It's the precision. It really is astounding considering what they had to work with. However, this is another aspect which could be solved with sufficient time (i.e. trial and error).

and how they were built by the Ancient Egyptians, by so-called professors, Egyptologists and ancient historian...."Experts"

What ancient alien Civilization, for example, built this ? >> http://old.world-mysteries.com/mpl_9.htm

    What for ?

Inca farming peasants, carving and stacking 100 ton stone blocks, we are told by the "Experts".
Cut and fitted together with sub mm. precision.
At 12,000 feet altitude, where just breathing is a bit of a struggle.

    What complete BS. "Experts" spout.

    and Tiwanaku
Large structures, carved with precision in the hardest stone next to diamonds.

The large stone blocks at Balbeck >> http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/esp_baalbek_1.htm

The Ancient Romans built their temples on top of the ruins of a much older structure.
A mysterious structure that no humans could possibly have built.

And who built this huge structure at Teotihuacan >>

    Wasn't us, Y'r Honor.

Actually how the pyramids and temples of Egypt were built is obvious, when you know, and actually very simply constructed, albeit with loads of manpower. If you've been to Egypt you'll know as there are still half finished examples. It's all down to mud and lots of it.

My guess, maybe aliens have something to do with. At least this is what Ancient Astronaut Theorists have been suggesting time and again... And it kind of make sense a bit since pyramids are built almost perfectly. And science have always suggested that ancient civilizations don't have the right tools capable of accomplishing such task...

I found myself to be a huge skeptic when I was a kid/teenager, and oddly enough, the older I have gotten the more open I am to the idea of the paranormal. I am not sure I believe in ghosts or poltergeists or things like that as of now, but I do believe in spirits of sorts. So I guess I am getting there.

    Obvious...when you know.
    Simple construction...
    OK.. explain.

Only the inferior Egyptian dynasty copies of pyramids were made
    with mud.
They are not half finished, they have been half washed away.
Because they were made with mud.

The real pyramids are made with hard sandstone and
    even harder granite.

Who said they were made from mud?

That's the trouble with this forum, instead of saying "oh, that sounds interesting, how were the made?" you go straight to Google to get some "facts" to try and prove someone is wrong. It just makes it impossible to have a proper conversation/debate.

I would say yes. I have had three very strange experiences that couldn't be determined by logic.

One was at an old girlfriend's house when I was a teenager - we had only been going out for a few weeks. The house was a former vicarage where sometimes the deceased were brought and kept in the cellar for prep. We were sat in her room watching tv when all of a sudden a hat that was nestled on top of a book shelf flew across the room. I jumped and shouted - to which she just calmy replied "oh that's just the ghost". Various other noises and bumps whenever visiting and I just got used to it whilst with her.

The second was when visiting Samlesbury Hall in Preston with my wife. I was going up to a small narrow room at the top of a corridor and went to look out of the window at the grounds. I suddenly got a very strange feeling like my body was in a vice and I found it very hard to breath. Upon leaving the room my wife stopped to read the plaque on the entrance which explained that a monk had killed himself in the room.

The third was in a rented flat in what used to be a hotel in Withington (Manchester). I was sat at my desk on the laptop one evening when all of a sudden I was flung backwards off my stool onto the bed. I wasn't rocking and my feet were on the floor. The only explanation I had was a trapped nerve had caused it but it had never happened before or since despite suffering from sciatica. A few weeks later my flat mates girlfriend said she was awoken there during the night by an old lady sat at the end of the bed smilling at her with her hands in her lap. We later did some research and found out there had been a few suicides and murders when it was a hotel....

I don't know about ghosts but aliens definitely exist. I remember an old girlfriend of mine telling me she was made pregnant by a star child from Venus who looked exactly like Kevin the spotty ginger teenager next door but with a cardboard box on his head.

As she remarked 9 months later while changing little Spock's nappy. If it wasn't an alien how could he possibly know her name, dress exactly like Kevin and deposit "star eggs" into her womb with his space probe?

    Makes you think doesn't it?
