Pagerank Update Oct 2012

Not seeing any changes either, but it wouldn't surprise me if Google were on a mission to be less and less predictable.

I remember a year or 2 ago Google didn't update the pr toolbar for many months (6?) and then seemed to trickle change some, but not all sites at a time.

Webgeek, are they back to being quite predictable again from what you know?

They've been running 3 month intervals for as long as my senility allows me to remember.

I was predicting first week of November, since the last was first week of August.

Yeah we watch page rank closely, not because I give a hoot what my site PR is, but because I know that high PR backlink from a niche site carries more weight than low PR backlink anyday.

Pagerank is worthless, its not a measure of quality in the slightest. Just like Alexa it can be inflated by gaining a couple of higher PR links - so a naff 200 page website gets a link off some PR4 linkpage, then the awarded site is now suddenly up in status

Status is earned, by constructing a worthy content-based site, built by links and visitor-flow - there's really no substitute....

Depends who is doing the measuring. Google use pagerank as an indicator of importance.

Google use pagerank as an indicator of importance.

But that judgement is irrelevant, as so many won't understand how rankings work. Its only the SEOers, web designers and some techies who really care what PR is/does - but PR benefit is minute compared to other stats tools.

I don't view page rank as trust rank, its not the same thing James, and people know this and do their voting in other ways. I'd place higher value via testimonials, site usage stats than what Google says.

Something is very wrong when deep link pages get a PR4, but
homepages are just a PR1 or 3 etc.

My mum has the Gogole toolbar installed. She looks at the PR score when she goes to websites. She likes to see a bit of green. She has no idea what it means but she does think that 'good websites' have more green than 'bad websites'.

I agree that PageRank is not trust rank, I wrote an article about trustrank about 6 years ago, before most even knew it existed :) I think we are talking about different things. You stated 'pagerank is worthless', I disagree with that statement, as do Google. BUT to understand the reasoning, we first have to understand that PR isn't what it used to be, it has changed.

Pagerank isn't about people, it was never meant for people to see, it is merely a means to an end. Every single day, billions of people drive a car without a single idea on how the internal combustion engine works. They still drive it without a clue about ignition timings, compression ratios, fuel mixture, preignition etc. WHY? Because they don't NEED to understand to be able to get where they want to go.

You stated 'pagerank is worthless' it isn't worthless, it is as integral to the algorithm as fuel is to the car (diesel, petrol, electric etc).

I will accept that pageRank is meaningless to the average searcher, but as a single statement, of which you made, that is just wrong.

PageRank is a ranking signal. It's at the heart of the whole algo.

The PR score on your toolbar isn't. It's a bit of pixie dust scattered by the Google fairies to catch the gullible.

And for the hard of reading: PageRank is named after its inventor Larry Page. It's all here is you want to know how it works.

Thanks... but it was a rhetorical question :)
