Page One on Google

I know a page ranking for a business in my sector is child's play, compared to other sectors. But for one of my search terms, the second most important, i am on the first page.

I set up the website in July, is two months a long time to get a website to page one of Google for a search term such as "Eco Cleaning Nottingham"?

Now i shall go for a page one in the search term "Cleaning Nottingham". I have no SEO experience and this is my first website, i think i've done well.

Was page 11 just three weeks ago, but i add new content every other day, all content is relevant and i update my website more often than my competitiors.

Is there a chance i can get that number one spot for the two search terms in question?

Hi,

Getting to number one for any search term is an achievement in my book!

I'm no SEO expert myself, but I have learnt a few things over the years.

I'm not sure you are #1 on .co.uk, but i think i found your site and I took a quick peak at your code. There's a few pointers I can give you which would definitely help improve your chances.

1. Clean up the HTML ... there's a some markup thats not needed and moving as much as possible to an external CSS stylesheet will mean search engines are only seeing relevant content and not diluted by markup

2. Javascript .. again the same as HTML, move it to external JS files and include them that way.

3. Image ALT Tags ... I only looked at one or two, but they didn't seem to have any .. if you optimise your ALT tags to use the key phrases you are targeting then this will help a lot by increasing your keyword frequency.

4. HTML Title tag ... again this should be keyword optimised and will add much more weight to the site

5. Content Heading ... use tags such as H1 to do the titles, this will give more weight than just formatting them as you have done.

This is only scratching the surface, but I can guarantee would help you a lot. The fact that you are updating content regularly will do you big favours as google loves fresh content.

I've not checked and you may already be doing this but tuning specific pages for specific key phrases will also be the way to go, so create a page just for a single term rather than trying to catch several at once. Also ensure your structure is efficient so that no page is more than about 4 clicks away from each other.

Then as I'm sure you probably already know, get quality backlinks ... the more people that link to your site the more important google will deem it ... but you need to ensure these sites are respectable, if they are not then they will do serious damage. Your aim should be to achieve backlinks from sites rated PR3 and above and again try and get the links so they contain your targeted key phrases.

If you can do all of the above then I have faith you will be able to get to position one fairly easily.

As for timescales, I know the pro's can generally do it very quickly and there are tricks that supposedly get google to move a little faster ... but in my experience it does take time and a couple of months would be considered quite reasonable.

hope that helps.

Also one more thing I forgot to mention, run your site through W3C XHTML & CSS validators ... if you can make your site W3C compliant then you will find it addresses some of the points I have mentioned and more.

Hi Jamie,

Thanks for the detailed reply. Thanks for taking a look at my website too. I will spend the best part of the weekend working on these pointers. I know it will help my pagerank, but i never actually realised the amount of work required. I'll also think seriously about getting somebody professionally to freshen up the website, i only built the website as a place to tell customers about my services, but the work involved is hard to do part time and takes alot of commitment.

Again, thanks a lot. Much appreciated.

No problem, I will be around if you do need any pointers. Don't let what I've said scare you though! They are just some general things that I know will all give you some help getting up in the rankings and are pretty easy to put into action for the most part.

You could research it and implement it over time, but of course if you are looking for quick results then hiring someone might be the way to go.

Might help if you had "cleaning Nottingham " in your title and that you did your meta description tags as well.;)

Most important element in onsite optimisation is the first word of the title .

Your new title is too long at 82 characters. It needs to be a max of 70 characters. Google wil truncate anything above this.

True, Google does truncate if over 70 chars but it does index words way past the 70 char limit and can also rank a page for words beyond this limit. The way to look at this is that Google visually allows everyone just 70 chars to 'pitch' to your punters with your keywords or sales message but there's nothing stopping you using non-visible areas of the title to good effect. Like every other technique, it has it's uses.

Hi,
You can get page one rank in google when getting some high pr back links and links from .edu and .gov domains...

I am in the process of trying to get backlinks, but it's going to be two days work. I am going to link to one company (Hand picked) from every city (Other than Nottingham) in the UK and casually ask if they'd be kind enough to link back. If they decline, i will keep their link on my site for six months, then change it. I'll also monitor these companies annually to see if my links are still there.

Wish i knew how to get a .gov.uk linkback.

One important factor when you sort out the backlinks is to use the term " Cleaning Nottingham" in the anchortext element. This then provides search engines with details regarding what the content on the url your pointing to is all about.

an example of how to use anchortext is:

<a href="your url"> cleaning Nottingham </a>

The advice here has degenerated into nonsense.

The site isn't going to rank well until you fix the page titles, page structure, content, broken images and escape from officelive ASAP.

If you want to rank well for 'Cleaning Nottingham' these need to be the first two words in your page title, repeated in your H1, the main content, anchor text und so weiter.

However, these are not going be highly converting - it's ranking well for specific services that is going to bring in the new clients.
