As many as it needs.

I’ve got pages that rank well with just a couple of paragraphs. Other pages have 1000+ words.

There is no diffinitive answer. As long as it demonstrates EAT and ticks all of Google’s boxes you are good to go.

However…

If it’s obvious this is just a site for adverts and affiliate links Google may well take a dim view and not rank you as well as other sites.

Thank you for your reply.
How do affiliate sites generally make money if google will not rank them?
Is there any point in having affiliate sites now?
There will be a high proportion of quality and authority content. I have the appropriate professional qualifications.
As what will be advertised and sold is high value, there does not need to be hundreds of links to make a profit.

Affiliate marketing doesn’t rely on Google. A lot will use social media, email lists, forums, content sharing sites and so on.

It’s possible to rank well but it all depends on what keywords you use. Your qualifications are irrelevant.

Sites like medium.com

Authority comes from inbound links, reviews, referrals and peer reviewed papers (for example). It’s not about what you say about yourself, it’s all about what other people say about you.
