Are you suggesting we should take notice of Alexa data?

If so then maybe Alta Vista would be another good place to visit...

“ I would “ recommend a site like WIX there is nothing wrong with testing the waters on a start up when money is tight. People will try tell you not to use them but i know a number of people that makes £1000s using these platforms with simple sales via paypal. Test the waters and grow as your business does, don’t jump straight in spending the little cash you have.

Don't use Wix. Don't use Wix. Don't use Wix. Don't use Wix. Don't use Wix. Don't use Wix.

I honesty don’t see what your hate against such sites are, they help many new business start-ups who then go on to bigger and better things. It’s proven to help, maybe not as a permanent thing but as something to test the waters with.

Maybe you can be more helpful and give a reason why it’s no good as a temporary thing ?

Because you are tied to their servers and you can't redirect to a new site should you upgrade to a new application. You are stuck with their templates and layouts and wix is almost impossible to optimise properly for the search engines.

There are loads of low cost ecommerce applications out there all of which give you full control and the freedom to transfer the site should you need better or bigger hosting.

New business start ups are sold the idea they can get a site set up cheaply without knowing the pitfalls. If they did a bit of research they would soone realise wix, weebly, 1and1, vistaprint, gbbo and all the others might be very pretty but are hopeless for actually converting.

Fair points, But... you can still use their service to establish yourself then build a fresh new website and transfer your domain should your business grow to that point? Granted you can’t transfer the content. Good marketing and networking along with a lot of hard work will get people to the website regardless of your ranking on google. You made some good points though ...

But when you set up the new site all marketing links will be lost. Anything google knows about will be lost. Not using Wix mean a lot less marketing and networking and hard work. A good ecommerce application is as easy to set up as wix and has all the tools built in to help marketing, promotion and SEO.

I echo what @fisicx says.

DIY site builders such as Wix go overboard on code bloat - you have so much crap stuffed into the pages that a search engine hasn't got a clue what to do when it visits the site - none of your target audience will find you in the search engines using sites built with these site builders making the whole operation, however cost effective it is, almost pointless!

I picked a Wix theme at random from their website...

This is just a glimse at what the source code looks like.

It's a mess beyond all belief. This is what all site builders are like. Do not use unless you want waste money and hinder your business online!

Incidentally, the theme I picked took ages to load - looking at the above code, it is little wonder...
