What servers would your recommend?

I hate to be pouring any discouragement on your plan, but I did want to sound a note of advice.

If you want to provide online storage for other people's stuff, then your phylosophy is wrong. You want the cheapest servers?

Big alarm bells. Proper security for such a project would be vital, and the cheapest server arrangement is not the way to achieve that. You absolutely need arrangements that will nail this issue totally.

Couldn't agree more, you need everything to be properly secure, or else you are risking the data of your customers from the start! The company I work for has a partner for this I am fairly certain (I think one of my colleagues works with them on this) and its quite expensive to get right.

Well, If Im going to start a business I don't want to be spending a tone and getting no money back in return, I would obviously spend more if I started to earn money.

If you are going to set up a document repository you are going to have a huge outlay. Thousands if not tens of thousands. You can't do this sort of thing on a shoestring unless it's only going to be for you and your mates.

Google docs, docstoc, box.net... There are hundreds of them.

well why wouldn't they use something like MOZY? It is a great tool, everything goes in the cloud and perfectly secure. I know many companies (including mine) which use it for backup free up to 10 GB.
