Online Marketing learning resources?

I'm sure this has been asked before but I, as any e-commerce business owner, am getting slightly obsessed with internet marketing for my web-sites and some other projects I have.

Problem is, I don't know much about it, I just find it very clever and would like to learn more...

Where best can I learn more about getting started in marketing online, from SEO, advertising and even on-site conversion tactics?

To date I haven't paid for any advertising, bar a failed attempt at Google Adwords. My main product line (seperate site) is no.1 in google for all direct searches but I want to increase it for some other keywords with more competition. My main site is pretty poorly marketed so I would obviously like to improve this. I have another two website projects (lead generation) underway for something else and this will rely on being top of google for the main keywords so anything I can learn will be put into use.

Would it be worth someone making a sticky thread like in the other sub-sections but with resources and guidance about online marketing?

To be honest there's so much noise online that you will either learn the wrong stuff, get lead astray or just get confused.

I'd probably look at buying a book that has good reviews on Amazon to cover the basics.

Or I think the Hobo SEO starter guide is meant to be pretty good. Free download.

SEOMoz has a guide too that gets updated fairly often. Probably the best sort of starting point.

1- Go through below list and visit each link provided and understand each websites: http://www.ukbusinessforums.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=32162

2- For SEO, become a member of SeoMoz and follow Matt Cuffs's blog or videos

3- Learn well Google Analytics, Webmaster and Keyword tool. Search on Google for these, there are so many video or blog tutorials

4- Read Jeff's blog, he's one of my favorite: http://www.jeffbullas.com/ you'll get ideas about Social Networks

I think what you'd need is

- a comprehensive SEO guide for beginners
- a few subscriptions to key SEO blogs (because SEO standards change rather frequently)
- some practice, and your expertise will grow as you go

So, to go about these three, I'd recommend

SEO guide: either Google's Guide to SEO or SEO in Practice, both are free.

SEO blogs: find a list of Google's SEO blogs at the end of the first guide; and I'd also read http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/ and Search Engine Land

(even though these might be a bit full of industry jargon at first, things should become clearer as you go. SEL has a great system of organizing articles by topics, which helps you find more information on a particular topic if you don't really understand what they are talking about in a post).

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Digital Marketing is a huge section of different activities so like everyone else I would recommend reading up on the overall subject matter to start. Plenty of beginner guides already stated.

Then once you have a better understanding of the overarching plan you need to start focussing in on specific activities.

I have listed some of the main activities below. Have a look at the different types of activities involved, you don't need to do them all, just have a look through which activities would be relevant to your business and site. Pick one or two and start reading about that subject matter.

This will help focus your digital marketing.

I have broken down the following activities into three sections - Reach, Act&Convert, and Engage.

Reach and Act&Convert are essentially the ways how you get people to come to your site to make a sale.

Engage means essentially creating a relationship to encourage repeat visits and sales.

Reach
Search Engine Optimisation
Pay Per Click
Affiliate and Partner Marketing
Online Advertising
Online PR
Social Media Marketing

Act&Convert
Conversion Rate Optimisation
E-Commerce Management
Lead Generation
Home Page Optimisation
Landing Page Optimisation
AB and Multivariate Testing

Engage
Content Marketing Strategy
E-Newsletter and Promotional Emails
E-Contact Strategy
Customer Service and Support
Mobile Marketing
Social CRM

I know this is a little more advanced than where you may currently be. But by seeing the phrases listed above you can help piece everything together during your own research.

Hope that helps and gives you some sort of reference point.
