We are working with a client on launching a new online mag.

The mag would be free...

But my question is, how can we sell advertising space? if we dont have reader figures...

We have started gathering emails, etc of people that want the mag...

Your help appreciated.

You can use google ads. Google ads are based on a click through fee. In very simple terms, advertising on the Internet is vastly different from offline consumer or trade publications. In traditional magazines advertising rates are based on eyeballs or circulation figures. On the Internet the effectiveness of an advert and the position it is in is easily quantified. The standard here is click through rates. Simply put, if a person clicks on an advert, it is regarded as a qualified lead and the advertiser will pay an agreed amount of money each time someone clicks on the advert. Some of this revenue goes to Google, the rest to the owner of the site that had the advert displayed.

It works along the same lines as a PPC (Pay per Click) campaign would work

The upside is the site owner does not have to solicit advertising, the down side is you have little control over which adverts are displayed.

Hope this helps?

With affiliate clicks, etc.. how can i get full like a4 page adverts for our mag?

You make one yourself - eg. with an Amazon affiliate you can pick out some good offers and link to them directly with your affiliate tag.

To be honest, online mags are a dime a thousand so unless you get a nice big readership, you are not going to get any dedicated advertising. Pay-per-click is the way to go, eg. Google ads.

Can anybody suggest any software to use for people to view the mag online?

Thanks

Why not set it up as a website with different areas linked to for every edition?

This then has the advantage that you don't need to just rely on full page adverts and affiliate links but also use the google adsense option. A friend of mine is currently putting up a website and it gives a good example of what you can do about putting google adsense into a page

http://writethatcv.com/2008/07/should-i-write-a-cover-letter-for-my-cv-application/

He has only included a couple of articles so far but if you look around you will see how adverts can be placed and how the adverts automatically target to your keywords (in this case cover letter/ CV creation)

The additional advantage is that you can use wordpress and its themes that are available free (I have one I am very happy with for my own site).

This set up allows for affiliate links from the likes of commission junction and affiliate future, as well as google adsense links and amazon links etc.

When you have increased your readership you can often sell banner adverts and 125*125 adverts at decent prices.

also check out http://problogger.net for ideas in monetizing. It may be blogger focussed rather than ezine focussed but it should give you some good ideas.

Wordpres may be a bit basic for you, depending on what you are trying to do. The site I sent you to my friend is doing in wordpress and my blog at http://recruitmentnick.net is also wordpress.

Reading styles wise PDF for me is a favoured way of reading newsletters as it feels more professional than one in the body of an email but also gives good 'reading satisfaction' scrolling down or pressing next page.

Hi, I hope this advise helps you and anyone else out there who is doing something similar. I have started writiing websites for other people and us affiliate links to pay for the service. To cut a long story short, you can make a lot of money advertising trusted names on your website. If you want some more info please PM me or text me on 07877736731. Cheers KEV Test A Plug
