Online Card Processing

I am in touch with various card processing companies (lloyds cardnet, barclays, hsbc) however, someone mentioned that I could get online processing rather than a fixed terminal.

We (will) take all payments as 'Cardholder not present' (i.e. with card numbers taken over the phone or e-mail) and we will not have online payments.
My previous companies who do the same all have PDQ machines which you tap the details into.

But I see no reason why I shouldn't be able to do it online? Tips please!

Worldpay is the way to go.

The link is in my sig. :)

That's a little misleading as the basic WP service does not offer a terminal, you have to get the Direct service added to your account which is more money.

Sam, speak to your bank about getting a merchant account and then use Protx as the gateway. You can take payments through your site or through the virtual terminal.

Certainly I would not request anyone to e-mail card details. E-mail should never be used for secure communications unless it can be encrypted in some way (easily possible but must people don't use it). It is very simple to intercept and read other peoples e-mail.

I've created a similar site to this before, where card details are stored in a secure database for the client to log on and process all of the orders through their PDQ. That way, the only email that needs to be sent is one from the website saying there's been an order placed. Then, to view the order, and the payment details, you log onto the secure server.

Much, much, safer than sending card details through email (which you should never do).

Gavin, I don't know if you are aware but it is actually illegal to store any card information encrypted or not in your database unless you have been through the Visa verification process.

The number of hoops you have to go through along with the cost makes this pointless anyway...

Interesting... so for customers who have a PDQ and want to take card details from customers online and not use an online payment processor, how can they go about this?

Sending an email from the website to the client is just plain stupid, so I can't think of any other way around it?

I'd be interested to hear how this has been approached before...

Can't be done unless you get certified.

Totally agree about email. It really isn't worth avoiding the minimal costs of an online gateway such as Protx.
