Not received first paycheck yet

In my contract it says:
"I will be paid monthly normally on the last Friday of each month."

It also states in my contract:
My salary "will be paid monthly in arrears."

I started work on 1 April. The last Friday has gone.

You should have been paid. Did they have all your details - bank account, P45 etc, on the day you started? Are you working fior a huge organisation or a micro-entity? The former may need time to set things up, in which case you should speak to your manager and arrange for an advance of he money you should have been oaid, repayable on the last Friday of May. If you work for a small enterprise, point out their error.

Normally payment in arrears means you work the time then they pay you.

So you would have worked between the 1st and whatever cut off date - which could be last Friday or could be another date - and you get paid for that time on the last Friday of the month.
A little odd, arrears, monthly and paid 4 or 5 weekly. Still if it works then it works.

It is a small company. 6 staff, including directors. Although it is part of a bigger organisation, that is based in a different country.

I gave all my details on 2 April. I believe payroll handled it that day or the day after.

Yes. And you can sue them for unlawful deductin from wages. Talk to them!

NI was using a book provided by HMRC, tax she was pretty accurate. More accurate than some bigger employers with computerised payroll and a HR department running it.

Unfortunately she wasn't as good at noticing fraud.

Thanks - there were a few I didn't cock up, so I took that as a success on the whole. Not having done payroll for 25 years it was quite an experience.
