Whilst personally I dislike pop ups, I am testing again to see if I can get a better subscription rate of emails.

Please take a look and pass constructive criticism on the pop up (not the actual site). You will only get it once, so if you dismiss it and want to have another look you will probably be best served by opening and incognito window ( Chrome ctrl-shift-n )

I had to stop myself from closing the popup - it's an automatic reaction.

I'm sure they work well on sites that will send me useful stuff (like vouchers and discounts) but I can't see any reason why I would want a newsletter from a tech site.

So for me it wouldn't matter how it was worded, I still wouldn't sign up. However, I did read on one site that signup increased when they added a picture of the owner (that's you Alan).

Personally, I think they're better used when you're exiting the site. This one pops up far too early. If I have just clicked onto a site, I want to know if I like it and find anything useful about it before I'm going to sign up for a newsletter.

Good idea - should I use the cartoon caricature or a real photo?

Also I've had one sign up last might since I put it in, compared to the side bar sign up rate which averages 1 per month, so if that is a trend to extrapolate its 60 times more effective lol!

Also I noticed you unsubscribed from my main business new letter the other day :) I'll have to talk to you about that :)

Hi Alan. As a user, it irritates me to be welcomed with a popup. I think the same thing that they're better used when you're exiting the site. I also noticed that there are too much texts on your pop up. Keep it as simple as possible. It is even better not to use and try to sell your idea within your website :)

Good popups work in my experience, so it's well worth trying again.

My initial thoughts is that the first thing most users will read is irrelevant copy:

    Welcome
    to my blog site
Don’t Miss Out by clicking X

Whereas the first thing they should read is the benefit, which is:
Get Awesome Deals and Technical tips by email

Hope this helps, please keep me posted!

The best way to get anyone to sign up to your newsletter is by offering something of value in exchange. You mention "Awesome deals" and "tips", that's too generic. If you DO have deals then tell the viewer what they are and only give it to him if he signs up. Same for tips, something like "see how I saved company X £200/day with one simple linux trick" would work better (obviously, I am making this up).
Final word, be mindful of using email sign up pop-ups as they will slow the performance of your site down. These days, speed is of the essence in Google's world
