For an SEO point of view what should I be asking any new website designer for.

I want to build my site as SEO friendly as I physically possible, then I will get to work on my SEO once this is built.

I May be going with 2 different companies or one just want an idea of what to ask for.

I know having the right text can help and having a news section for new content, does Twitter help or any direct links to social networking groups help.

Just basic things I should be asking for to get the most SEO friendly website.

Still treat it as two separate entities

Seo is essential for a new website as it will be more difficult to rank than an old website.
I would prefer to design as well as SEO a website to just SEO. Make my job a lot easier and saves me fixing a website.

Okay the things that are important.

Understand what it is you want to be found for on Google in relation to the products you are selling. Do some research on keywords and which ones are search for more often https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal. The figures are just a rough indication of relative demand, but it gives you a good idea.

Titles tags should be unique to every page and contain relevant keywords.

Say for example your website was selling counselling services in Birmingham you homepage title tags for me should be something like

Counselling Birmingham | Counselling Services in Birmingham | Jimmy Smith's Counselling Service

The say you had a specific section on debt counselling that pages title tags would be something like

Debt Counselling in Birmingham | Counselling Services | Jimmy Smith's Counselling Service.

In a similar way meta data should be keyword rich and the site should employ headings containing keywords too.

Content also requires keywords that you want to be found for - but you don't need to over do it.

If you're in the UK its better to have a .co.uk domain, but if you are using a .com its crucial that you hosting is in the UK if you want to come up on google.co.uk.

If you can afford getting SEO services right off the bat then go for it. It'll save you a lot of time in the long run and a lot of studying... especially with the often conflicting advice you'll find. If you're going to study pay for the advice there as well...

A SEO company will be able to help you with keyword research, site structure and on-page factors before even thinking about link building. This will save you a lot of pain and give your website a chance of ranking now instead of a few years from now when you work it all out

For building seo friendly website, if your designer then follow below basic guide lines.

2)[FONT=&quot] [/FONT]Minimum use of flash and graphics which take much time to load in page.

3)[FONT=&quot] [/FONT]Do not use inaccessible site navigation (JavaScript menus).

4)[FONT=&quot] [/FONT]Give image name which cover the targeted keyword for that page. For exp in web-design.html page use image name like web-design.gif or website-design.gif or any combination separated by hyphen.

5)[FONT=&quot] [/FONT]Do not put any hidden text/DIVs on template; everything must be visible to visitors.

6)[FONT=&quot] [/FONT]Some time mission statement written in image and placed on template, if possible than put that in text instead of image.

7)[FONT=&quot] [/FONT]Use small latter in url name separated by hyphen (-) instead of underscores (_) or spaces i.e. outsourcing-india.html

8)[FONT=&quot] [/FONT]Use header tags appropriately (H1 > H2 > H3), use H1 tag only once, H2 tag two times and other tag can be used multiple time.

When building the website for my business I did the following:

1. Made sure relevant keywords were in the Page Title eg. Business name, what we do, location.

2. Added Meta Data. Thought about the keywords people would use to search for us.

3. Used relevant ALT tags for images on the site.

4. Saved images using descriptive names. If they come up in Google Images it may generate some traffic when people click on them.

5. Used good internal links for navigating around the site and external links, linking from other websites to ours. This helps to generate traffic. A site map can also be useful in a site. Google follows links (I think)

6. Used keywords in the main text of a page, especially the homepage.

After a week of our new site being up we were appearing on the second page of Google when anyone searched for graphic designers in Stirling or Falkirk and it's now constantly on page 1.

Build the site for people not the search engines.

Of course you need to consider the page/site structures and the keywords within but don't forget that it's people who use your services not the search engines.

Personally I would involve SEO from the outset as it "might" give you an idea of what key phrases you want to be found for (from your research) - this should then give your web developer some idea of how the navigation should work on your site.

Too often we come across the site already built, at which point we have to go in and talk about new pages to be added, or pages completely being restructered.

Not many web developers that I know do the research that an SEO company / individual does - it is usually "what do you want" and that is what you get.

The gap between ^ that and what will bring you actual traffic is sometimes very wide

Very much a fact! As I have said before (and been ripped over..), SEO starts with Good Hosting (UK location) and clean coding.
