If you want to be an SEO consultant you need to start doing SEO on a whole bunch of test sites. Give yourself a couple of years to master the techniques and then start charging.

Forget Moz and SEMrush, they only way to learn is to do it yourself.

Or do Ray's excellent course: http://www.freshbananas.co.uk/

And then do lots and lots of practising. And make sure you do thing wrong as well to find out what doesn't work (just as important and know what does work).

If you want help there are lots of bods who can do so - but they won't do it for free. Many people have spend years and years honing their skills - they aren't going to give away all their secrets to competitor for free

You don't need software but you can invest in some analytical tools. All the training you need is Ray'shttp://www.freshbananas.co.uk/ course. Everything else you learn by doing.

For example. Experiment with the page titles: the order of the words, the language, punctuation, case and structure. See what happens when you include or exclude plurals, use synonyms and everything else you can think of.

SEO is something you learn by reading, reaserching and testing. Rinse and repeat ad infinitum. There are thousands of blogs, forums and other material you can access to do your research.

Go to the site and you will see - it's all listed on the homepage.

But most of your research will be reading. Probably months and months of reading and you will learn to filter out the BS and pick on the bits that matter. And you will need to keep reading, keep researching and keep testing. I probably do 10-15 hours of testing each week to find out what works and what doesn't.

This is a scary post, I doubt anyone sets out to be a bad SEO, it just happens, and as mentioned it takes time and practice to be good and know what does and what does not work.

Go get yourself an a job before setting out on your own, learn from others too many people in this industry do a bad job, some get lucky some are just good and know what works, and if you think they are going to share that with you so early on go think again,

In reality Google actually tells you what it likes so concentrate on that side of things, shortcuts don't work (well if they do they wont for long)

For me your first few clients will be friends or family and wont bring you in much revenue but these people will be invaluable, if you go charging full price and get it wrong then you will have a very short lived career

Good Luck its not as easy as it seems

Nowdays most of valuable SEO factors reveals its real significance after 6-12 months, so you may get wrong conclusion if try to evaluate your experiments based on weeks periods.

Teen years ago, SEO was like second Newton's law - action and instant reaction (after first update = 14 days).

Plus, if you would like to manipulate Google SERPs, you need to focus on on-page and off-page factors.

Good luck anyway.

That's Newton's third law. And it's actually: for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Which would mean anything you do in SEO would result in the opposite happening. Makes no sense. Even after 14 days.

I think first you should gather insights of SEO industry by reading online blogs and videos shared by some of the best SEO experts. Before going to any paid online course, you should first research and understand the working procedure of Digital Marketing. SEO is one part of Digital Marketing. Keep yourself up to date with latest SEO trends & techniques and also follow the blogs of Neil Patel, MOZ, Upreports and Backlinko.

I agree with the sentiment of start a website for yourself to demonstrate you can do SEO.

I speak from experience, I failed with the first website I set out to rank. I had read many articles and guides. I thought I knew exactly what I was doing but turns out I didn't. I failed. But it was a learning curve. The next one I did worked better.

You don't need dedicated SEO software. Products like SEMRush and KWfinder have a set number of free searches every day. Use them to find a niche you want to pursue. Then get hosting for like £60-80 a year, a domain name (inc with some hosting accts) and install WordPress.

Then add content and build links, the core of SEO.

Any savvy business owner would ask to see previous examples of results before paying someone for a service. And even if you don't freelance/consult, then its a great thing to put on CV for employers. I built and ranked a site in my own time.

Take Ray's course over at Fresh Bananas, register yourself a dozen or so cheap domains, throw up one page sites of 100% unique content, as you go through the course optimise each one for some long tail phrase, like 'mens medium star wars pyjamas' or 'green oval widgets' - each one a different phrase.

Rank check before you start the course. Then take the course, optimise and rank check again after a couple weeks.

Make some tweaks, wait a couple weeks, and rank check again.

Try adding a 2nd page, interlinked to the first. Try 'tube video, social media post, external article and maybe one of those great linkbuilders you can get for $5 on fiverr. See how each one impacts your rankings. Make notes of what you change and when, then...

Rinse, lather repeat.

Most of us who've done SEO for a living have tested on hundreds of sites. Heck most of us have, or had, over 100 domains just for playing about with - and with 300 to 500 client and test sites we monitor for who changes in the rankings. It makes finding trends and algorithm changes much easier to detect.

If you aren't already well versed in SEO, plan on taking that course, rereading it 3 or 4 times, experimenting with sites for a few months, and then feeling pretty good about your skills. It'll be at this point you're a proper padiwan ready to begin your studies in one, or the other, ways of the force.

@webgeek out of interest what tools do you use to track your experiment domains? I don't do SEO for my clients, but I do have quite a few experiment domains, well less than 100 but more than I can comfortably manage manually in terms of tracking impact. Occasionally I keep notes in a Google Sheet but then get distracted ...

Some basics that I would like to share with you.

    1. List your business in credible business directories. There you add details about the business name, address, phone number and website address. You should at least list your website on Google.

    2. Be visible on Social Media platforms. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc. Post regularly and be creative, as this will get you traffic. Don't forget to link your Social Media to your website.

    3. Create a blog on your website with interesting and educational content. It will bring traffic to your website.

I use SE Ranking. It's useful for KW tracking and search visibility. A nifty feature is you can group KWs, so if you're running campaigns it's easy to see the impact of optimisation efforts.

No, I saw in Facebook so just suggested.
Well that was a silly thing to do. Stop taking advice from Facebook, there is more BS spoken on FB than created by all the cows in India.

Don't try to understand SEO from a couple of lessons. You will have the impression that you understand but in fact you have big chance to damage the website.

The SEO lessons is another money in teachers website, that's is the reality. Real "tricks" will be never revealed and you will have no benefit. SEO is hard even for they that call himself "professionals", but none of them will admit.

Think at SEO at a big labyrinth, you need to see the pictures from hundred meters high and not from the plan.
