Afternoon

Further for discussions held yesterday, I decided to take comments on board and have made a few changes. (I will be arranging this site to be hosted under its own, but my regular web guy is in Scotland for a week!)

At the moment, the contact page is pretty meaningless but I will be arranging for a 'form' to be on this page so clients can contact me via that, afterall, my e-mail is on the bottom of every page already.

Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

The site looks good but you need to try and add more content for SEO, why not have your webmaster add a blog feature so you can add fresh content every few days without needing to learn new skills.

SEO?? :) Sorry, what is that?

I think the blog would be a great idea. I regularly write for bi-monthly magazine aimed at office secretaries, etc so I'm thinking of putting thouse on my site, or should they go on a blog?

I have written tips on event management, and have interviewed the PA to the editor or Scarlet Magazine and also the PA to the CEO of Macmillan Cancer Support for an insight to a day in their life, etc.

Try and add relevent content every few days and make sure your blog software alows people to pick up RSS feeds etc.

If you want super easy, simple setup try blogger.com and ask your designer to build a template round it and use the "ftp" option for uploading.

You can also get 100% custom scripts which will do the job well and "ping" notification of your updates to the right people.

You also need to try and build up some backlinks as I can see you only have two on MSN. You can buy links from high pagerank sites for a few dollars a month and this will help the big engines find and index you on a daily basis

I'm not the only 'Essential Assistant' alive...but the others are in America and Australia!

I think it is a significant improvement over the last version of it.

Whilst I know that I pointed out the fact it was wrong that the email address at the bottom of the page wasnt a mailto: link I see you now have the complete image as a link to your email, even if you were to click on the section with your web address.

The only other thing which I felt was missing from my scan reading was your billing basis - for example you state that travel is charged at £15/hr, if I asked you to sort out a train journey for me this could be a 5 minute job to check thetrainline website - do I get billed for a part hour or the complete hour?

As an aside - I was surprised that your presentations hourly rate is significantly below the DTP, I guess it depends on if you are including creating / optomising the copy for the pres but from a personal perspective, I always find presentations much more challenging than a DTP (but then my pres are for consumption of our exec/ board and my DTP tends to be more comms out to our customer/ support advisor grade staff)

What you could do is set up your blog ASAP and make sure its linking correctly to your current site, buy some ads from text-link-ads.com and take advantage of the free $100 offer. At the end of the month cancel the links but in the mean time build up some free inbound links using articles etc

Change your page headings...


The bit that says - 'Essential Assistant - Microsoft Internet Explorer'

To something like - 'Editorial Assistant - Virtual personal assistant, secretary, administrator, researcher and writer'

Also submit your site to FREE online directories like www.splut.com

It will help with getting good rank on search engines, which will mean people will find you easier with a google search.

I've done everything on the site, which makes me the web master. So i haven't done any real SEO at the moment, wouldn't really know where to start but can research in to it.

Don't forget to change your headings, having keywords there helps a fair bit.

I have been advised to submit to at lest 30-40 to make a big differance, try and do it whenever you have a free moment.

If you like I will submit you to the major engines and directories to get you some organic traffic.

I'd love that, if it's free. If it's at a charge, I'm better off doing it myself.
I don't earn enough to be going crazy just yet :)

It looks a lot better now - the photos are vastly better, they give a much more professional feel. I agree with the other comments though about further improvements.

Thats a bit of a negative attatude to have about someone offering to help a new startup. I can assure you I am clued up on SEO and run over 125 sites which have no problems with search engines.

Why not post positive comments and help this girl take her business forward

Not negative, but sensible. The offer of helping a new start up is great, just thought it good advice to warn of the dangers of using people you don't know for something as important as submissions.

Snap, I'm also a bit clued up on SEO too. 11 years of it and a few more sites than you. The advice I gave regarding the submits was well meant and positive.

Hi Liz,

Like your site

A few of my observations if I may. I've noticed you're using frames and from the point of view of SEO (search engine optimisation) it is generally agreed that's a bad idea. Also, i've noticed, the alignment of text as the top isn't always consistent. That's because some pages have headings and others don't, and sometimes the text gets too clsoe to the navigation at the top.

Also I find, personally, that the information is a bit cluttered (not that it's uninteresting) but that I have to make a bit of an effort to read thru it (maybe I'm being lazy). I feel that maybe more space, bullet points or subheadings would do the trick. Can I offer a personal suggestion, try "Trebuchet" or "Trebuchet MS" for the fonts and see what that gives.

I feel that you're almost there with the site and with the services you offer it's an attractive combination.

Oh, also to re-iterate what someone said above I think a blog would be a great way to keep your site fresh and interesting, especially given the fact you operate a business that lends itself very well to that kind of personal interaction.

Funnily enough, this is the first site I've made myself where I haven't actually used frames. I've used a table if thats what you mean. I'll work on the text, etc. Thanks for pointing that out.

I agree with the blog idea and intend to set this up. However, keeping that in mind. What if I had a media page on my site? It would show my press releases, interviews I've done with other PA's (PA to editor at a top women's mag, and also PA to CEO of Macmillan Cancer Support), articles/tips which are admin related, tips on event management and such. Would that be good or would you prefer an actual blog?

Also intend on adding a links page for other businesses. Basically anything I am unable to offer but will be useful to my clients, I will link.

I think your ideas suggestions are good except for the links page...I think they tend to now degrade a website from a user's point of view and do not really serve any practical purpose
