What sort of network are you talking about? LAN, WAN, etc.

In a way this is a bit of an outdated subject. In the days of thick and thin wire Ethernet and token ring networks this was much more important. In modern LANs with UTP (cat5/cat6) cabling and wireless networks the capabilities of the network are much more important than topology.

This is a pretty open ended question, it depends on how many clients, servers and other equipment you want to have on the network and how you want the data and resources to be shared. You need to consider if you have wireless clients etc.
You are probably not going to want a either of the mentioned topologies for example if you require a large WAN that needs a high level of fault tolerance.

Its a dead cert for Star Network...

There is hardly any reason to choose any other type of network these days unless you want to pull apart the work you've done to later change it to star.

No longer matters tbh.

As when you start expanding, assuming you have limited budget, you may have to adopt some or both to a degree.

ie - if you have a star network and you have WAN links on the endpoints then that will evolve to a hybrid topology

Although asking a question like this also begs the question - your not planning at doing this yourself are you?
