top albums of 2009:

this town needs guns - animals
biffy clyro - only revolutions
colour - anthology
marmaduke duke - duke pandemonium
we were promised jetpacks - these four walls... See More
maybeshewill - sing the word hope in four part harmony
their strange gathering - a matter of profit
scraps of tape - the grand letdown
grammatics - grammatics
sucioperro - pain agency

I've got a massive, eclectic taste in music; I wouldn't know where to begin. I'm a huge fan of all good Scottish alt (early Idlewild, Biffy, Stapleton, Avast!) London indie (Cats x3, This Town Needs Guns, Colour) US indie (Faraquet, Cap n Jazz, Algernon Cadwallader) and anything that sounds like Fugazi or Nirvana. Anything with a punky undertone (I also like punkrock ranging from Ramones to NOFX)

Post rock I love Molia Falls, Once We Were, Scraps of Tape. There's an amazing scene in Sweden. Away from the guitars I like old school Dj Shadow, James Lavelle / UNKLE, a lot of big beat mixes.

before I saw them I had never heard their first album I thought their first album was the one before 'the one with chasing cars on'

Run is an epic song though, you can not fail but sing a long to that.

I will have to check out yet another band, keep em coming

One before Chasing Cars (Eyes Open) is Final Straw. They have 2 albums before that, Songs For Polar Bears and Once It's All Over We Still Have To Clear Up. :D

Gary Lightbody also did a side project with The Reindeer Section which is pretty awesome. There are two albums, Son of Evil Reindeer is best. This year he is working on another side project Tired Pony which has a country tinge to it.

Gary is a genius, he just keeps churning out the songs. :D

A good thread you started NewBeats.

I rarely listen to radio or music on tv, but have a very eclectic taste & collection of music in iTunes that I stream wherever I am - Mozart sits happily next to Metallica; Iron Maiden's Phantom of the Opera is accompanied by Lloyd-Webber's production. I do buy a lot of music randomly (just to try something different out), and will look at the bands mentioned here.

But for Desert Island discs, Alice Cooper would always have to feature for me. I know some (including my mother) used to criticise blindly (deafly), but
I Never Cry and How You Gonna See Me Now often convert people (sadly these videos are not great recordings to appreciate the songs though).

Music can either have a positive or negative effect on society - depending on the type of music being played and it's purpose

That's very true.

Does anyone remember the experiments that were carried out by researchers where they played classical music through the PA system at different railway stations where groups of youths were usually known to congregate and vandalise the station? Apparently the youths hated it so much that the would actually leave the station (probably to take their aggression out on the vehicles in the car park).

Thanks to you and this bloody thread, I've got out all my CDs and am listening to music all the time.

Staff are getting fed up because everytime they come to ask me something I've got my headphones on.

Grrrr....!

:D:p:D

Haha! I see what I have done now. Surely you can share the wonders of your cd collection with your staff..

I like the idea of desert island disks.. There are just so many albums out there that make you feel different. That would be a very hard call to make. I think Metallica S&M album would be there for sure.
