When I bought a my new computer (a few months ago) it came with MS Office Starter - basically it is a cut down version of Office with a basic version of Word & Excel (and a couple of other tools)

As all I need to use office for is some simple word processing and spreadsheet work, this basic version is fine and does all that I need.

However, today, I went to open a saved (word) document and couldn't open it as it has been converted to the DOCX format, along with all other word documents that I have saved. Similarly, excel spreadsheets are now appearing as XLSX files and won't open by double clicking on them.

However, I f I open Word and then open the files from within Word my saved documents open fine (same with Excel files) so at least I can still open my documents, but its a bit of a pain having to open Word or excel first.

Can anyone explain what's happened and how to go back to how things were yesterday (would a system restore do that?)

I installed Linux on an old laptop - and LibreOffice came with that. Does that open docx files? If push comes to shove I'd rather install LibreOffice than pay MS for an Office upgrade.

Thanks in advance

Jeff

It could be that something is wrong with the file associations. Right click on a Word file you can't open. Select Open With and select Word 2010.

Thank you - that's cracked it (I had to open with "Microsoft Office Client Virtulization Handler"). Set that to be the default program to open with and bingo, job done.

Thanks again
