moral dilemma

If I found a product that one of the UKBF forum members sells...only I found it 80% cheaper....should i post it here?
we would all benefit...apart from the person who already sells this stuff...who would obviously go broke :?

Depends what the product is I guess.

It may be 20% cheaper but does the vendor offer a much better service?

Obviously there is only a need to post it here if someone asks for the product/service.

I have no gripe with this person, I just found some products a lot cheaper elsewhere, It is nothing to do with my business, advertising, links, or anything like that. So it is no skin off my nose.

Some people here have purchased these products

I guess I will just sit on it and not undermine this persons sales.

 

Perhaps it someone offering felt tip pens that are permenant when used on rose petals.....

Now, this will turn into pure assumptions, but I'll make one here. If they're 80% cheaper, there are many reasons why it could be, and it doesn't mean the person is ripping them off or doing wrong. Besides, some thing you actually WANT to pay more for. I wouldn't buy a Tag watch for £300, yet spending £1500 on one makes it more valued, regardless of what it cost to make.

Why not send the expensive UKBF member a PM setting out your dilemma and see what he says

 

There is no dilema here, as this is basically non of our business!

If the person who offers the service at an 80% discount, wishes to register here and introduce themselves, then that is up to them, but I see no reason why a third party should get involved and stir things up.

I think we should leave this one well alone and get on with some work!

Yup - I agree.

People can sell their services to whomever they want at whatever they like - it's up to the buyer to shop around.

Not a problem with me, i was doing just that, shopping around, and i noticed something quite cheap...obviously i my first instinct is to tell everyone what a bargain it is...and then i realised that it would possibly undermine one of the members services...

As has been said above, you have to be careful and make sure you're comparing apples with apples.

I agree that nowadays, with the Internet, it's hard to imagine such wide difference in prices, and there's little excuse for not shopping around.

In the dark ages, before the Internet, our sister company produced complicated analysis equipment that required several optical components. One such component was a tiny, special type of bulb (or bulb cover, I forget exactly) that we knew was imported from the far east, but could only be sourced through an importer here in France. One day the buyer called the importer at lunchtime and spoke to a new assistant who had just started working there. He seized his chance and asked if she could give him the details of the supplier and the device. She gladly complied, unaware of the implications. The buyer telexed the Japanese company, found that the importer had no exclusive rights or agreement, and would accept orders directly.

Result: Unit cost per item dropped from £7 to 20p (or 40p if you include transport from Japan). Seems unimaginable today.

I think it depends on whether you want to sell this product yourself and make it into a new sideline for your business, or whether you are just posting it to help us find cheaper products.

If it's the former then I would have say go for it, but if it's the latter then you could harm yourself:

a) The product / service, although cheaper may be of terrible quality. People will be upset that you recommended them, no matter how honourable your intentions.

b) You could get into a big argument with current suppliers who will go out of their way to justify the price difference. There is nothing in it for you so why stir up the hornet's nest?

c) If the product is really bad, then the low quality mud will stick to you too. Subconciously there will be something negative associated with you personally.


If it was me I would just keep it to myself and wait for a while to see how the product works out, (I assume you will be buying it yourself) and then if it turns out to be ok then pass on the details to a few choice people via PM.
