Hi Everyone
We have quite a few websites and we are doing ok in the listings for our main search terms but monitoring them all is a real ball ache , i just wondered if there was any tools or software available that i can use to keep an eye on where our sites are ranking on google, preferably to have them all in one place to check on a daily or weekly basis ?

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks C .

Does it matter?

It's more important to analyse who is landing, from where came and what they did. That way you can put all your efforts into the bits of the business that make you money.

I use this one to check client website rankings http://www.link-assistant.com/rank-tracker/ (I presume it is the same one that Nitro suggested). It can occasionally mis-report but in the main it's very effective. They offer a freebie version which lets you check rankings but not be able to produce a report of rankings that you can publish to clients but, you can buy into the product if you need this. There's lots of online tools for this including paid ones but crikey, a lot of them persistently get it all wrong.

Note: If you do decide to go the paid way with Rank Tracker then do understand, it is a 6 month working contract for the software and then you have to renew and pay a subscription over again. To be honest, I think it's well worth it but it depends on what you need.

Hope that helps.

Another vote for rank tracker from me. Very effective tool, and the latest update has made it much easier to navigate.

As above, we constantly see webmasters who are obsessed with seeing where they are ranked and they are always after that trophy phrase but Analytics can be one of the best SEO tools all together.

SEOmoz is doing a free trial for 30 days then it's $99 per month after that. You can cancel before that time and you won't be charged. Oh, and WEBCEO is good for ranking reports too.

but not sure I'd want to run a tool that stressed Google out enough to think about blocking me.
And you would be right to be concerned.

Don't use unauthorized computer programs to submit pages, check rankings, etc. Such programs consume computing resources and violate our Terms of Service. Google does not recommend the use of products such as WebPosition Gold™ that send automatic or programmatic queries to Google.

I always use manual checks on Google.

A problem with tools is that if Google inserts a local search table, or news section, or image search, into any keyword search, your postion will get bumped down. Looking at numbers only, it looks like your site saw a drop on affected keywords, when really Google just bulked up more crap on the keyword search.

Additionally, reliability has always been a problem for trackers even without that. US vs UK results has been one traditional problem. Another sneaky one is when the software tracks datacenters by IP and Google rolls out results on new ones - meaning you could tank in the SERPs and not know it until you check your analytics.

More to the point, you get an idea of context with manual checks - which sites are ranking, for which keywords, etc. That can give you pointers on what other sites are doing right that you can emulate. It also shows the short-term players and what they use to crash and burn.

And checking rankings for a small number of keywords, better to manually check these and log these in a spreadsheet every month IMO.

Numbers are nothing without context IMO.
